Montessori for Social Justice
As we celebrate Black History Month, it is important to review what we are doing to create a more justice and culturally responsive world. Last summer, Friends of Montessori partnered with Garden Oaks and Waltrip to host the annual Montessori for Social Justice Conference at Waltrip. The organization was founded on the evidence that Montessori offers children the executive functioning skills that link to long-term school success, skills that are missing from other successful public education reform models like “No Excuses” charter schools. Public Montessori schools like ours at Garden Oaks, offers ALL children a spectacular Montessori education. Montessori for Social Justice works to educate policy-makers that Montessori is aneffective modelof education reform.
Montessori for Social Justice is a network of educators, parents and community members committed to offering Montessori for all students, particularly in underserved communities. The goals are to:
- demonstrate that Montessori is effective atenrollinga diverse population of students
- show that public/non-profit Montessori schools can result inhigh achievement for students of color and help close the opportunity gap
- increase the number ofMontessori teachers of color
- increase thecultural competencies of all Montessori teachersso that Montessori isculturally responsive to students of color.

Peace Education
Peace education is the collaborative effort of parents, teachers and students both at school and in the greater community. The most powerful method of teaching our children is through both the adults’ example and the environment provided for our children. Be peace.
Weekly Montessori Moment
An education capable of saving humanity is no small undertaking; it involves the spiritual development of man, the enhancement of his value as an individual, and the preparation of young people to understand the times in which they live. ---Dr. Maria Montessori
