Embedded Credit

1.0 Purpose

The members of the Monroe County Board of Education believe that students often learn and retain more when lessons include hands-on activities where academic concepts are related to interest and to the task. When students are able to identify the real world application of academic concepts, mastery learning takes place. The contextual learning that occurs through the integration of knowledge and application in a CTE class offers greater opportunities for student learning. Monroe County Schools recognizes that academic concepts are often taught in Career and Technical Education classes. A review of the dropout rate and the fact that students often fail to understand the relevance of academic concepts to their chosen vocation, underscore the need to provide students with additional alternatives. Embedded credit permits students to experience more closely the connection between academic skills and their chosen career field. It is important to understand that students will have to earn the credit; it will not be automatically given to them for completion of a vocational program.

The diversity of student needs, abilities, level of motivation, learning styles, hopes and goals, are factors that support the addition of programs to strengthen student learning ability. By permitting embedded credit, the board recognizes this obligation and will offer additional opportunities to ensure student success for those seeking careers in technical education. The ability to earn embedded credit will permit students to take additional CTE classes, will permit closer alignment and relevancy of academic concepts to CTE course work, and will provide the opportunity for students to enter the work force with improved skills.

Students may be permitted to earn credit when the subjects are closely linked, and teachers and staff have reviewed the curriculum and determined that the class content will satisfy the requirements for awarding credit. Content standards and objectives will be incorporated in all classes where embedded credit is earned.

3.2The grade for embedded credit will be determined by adding grades earned in each class in the CTE concentration and dividing by the number of classes.

3.3Academic teachers assigned to JMHS will work with CTE teachers to insure that all CSO's are incorporated, and will be responsible for verifying that students have completed requirements for embedded credit.

3.4If a student receives embedded credit for a class where credit was previously earned, the student transcript will show both credits. However, only the highest grade will be used in the calculation of class rank.
