Community Advocacy Education On rights and responsibility

Client Rights and Responsibilities
MGI’s mission is to advocate on behalf of individuals and their families as they
seek to become aware of their rights and responsibilities. The mission is
fulfilled via the Community Advocate Program. This program utilizes clients
that once received MGI services to give back to the community. Clients are
developed via training modules, mentoring and job shadowing to provide the
services they once received. This tool empowers the advocate to be a
responsible citizen while sharing their personal story to assist others in the
community.
Housing Rights Workshop

MGI offers the free Housing Rights Workshop on a quarterly basis. This
workshop addresses housing discrimination, evictions, rent increases,
repairs, and security deposits. This workshop is presented by the Housing
Rights Center of Los Angeles. In addition, the HousingRightsCenter offers a
walk in Clinic at The Community Advocacy Center the first Wednesday of the
Month. The workshop and walk in clinic are available to English and Spanish
speakers.
Employment Rights Workshop

MGI offers the free Employment Rights Workshop on a semi-annual basis. This
workshop addresses how immigration affects your employment rights,
entitlement to employment insurance, worker’s compensation, and employer’s
right to fire an employee. This workshop is presented by an attorney from the
Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles. This presentation is in English and
Spanish.
Car Seat Training Workshops

MGI offers a free Car Seat Training Workshop on a quarterly basis. This
workshop addresses current laws that require car seats for children,
appropriate installation of car seats, and safety measures for children. This
workshop is presented in collaboration with the University of California at Los
Angeles. The workshop is in English and Spanish
CalWorks “Know Your Rights” Workshop
MGI offers a free CalWorks “Know Your Rights” Workshop on a semi-annual
basis. This workshop covers eligibility, use of the new EBT cards, various
services in CalWorks, and how to address benefit termination. This workshop
is presented in collaboration with the Los Angeles Coalition to End Hunger and
Homelessness, Welfare Reform Advocacy Project. This workshop is in English
and Spanish.
Legal Permanent Residence and US Citizenship Workshop
MGI offers a free Legal Permanent Residence and US Citizenship Workshop on
a quarterly basis. This workshop explains how to become a legal permanent
resident and US Citizen, also how the new immigrants and driver’s license
laws. This workshop is facilitated by an immigration attorney from the Legal
Aid Foundation of Los Angeles. This presentation is in English and Spanish.
Drug Abuse Prevention Workshop
MGI offers a free Drug Abuse Prevention Workshop on a quarterly basis. This
workshop describes the typical drugs used by teens and adults as well as
slang terminology. The mission of the workshop is to educate parents and
adults on the “subculture” of drug use and signs of drub abuse. This
workshop is presented by Asian American Drug Abuse Prevention. This
presentation is in English and translated for Spanish Speakers.
