SUMMARY

The Coordinator is responsible for the day to day operations of the Monash Men’s Shed

Background

Monash Men’s Shed (MMS) was established in 2011 as a Men’s Health initiative of the Monash City Council and is home to 170 members. The environment is one of safety, encouragement connectedness, where men share their skills and knowledge, basking in a sense of value and self-worth.

The Monash Men’s Shed is a Health Promotion Charity.

The principal purpose for which the Association is established is to operate as a charitable services institution engaged in both:

(a) the relief of distress; and

(b) the promotion of the prevention or control of diseases in human beings by providing a vehicle through which to:

(c) encourage the reduction of social withdrawal and to foster social inclusion among men; and aid the prevention and control of mental and physical health issues including heart disease, diabetes, prostate cancer and any other men’s health related issues by providing education and co-ordinating participation in early detection/prevention services

SCOPE

This position is responsible for the development and coordination of the Health Promotional activities of The Monash Men’s Shed and co-ordination of Community Strengthening initiatives that seek to meet the needs of the existing and future members of the Monash Men’s Shed.

This position provides support, information and advice to the MMS Committee of Management to achieve its health promotion objectives and will play a key role in liaising and networking with local organisations, local, State and Federal government representatives, funding bodies, sponsors and the general community.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage the Co-ordination of the Health Promotion activities of the organisation.
  • Manage the operational activities of the Shed
  • Support existing MMS activities and events.
  • Develop appropriate initiatives that advance the key objectives of the MMS.
  • Represent MMS at events, forums and deliver presentations.
  • Promote MMS and its activities to the community.
  • Support the culture within MMS of engaging men who are socially isolated, come from a Culturally and Linguistically Diverse background, and/or have a disability.
  • Maintain and develop networks relevant to the objectives of MMS.
  • Actively seek funding, sponsorship and partnerships to support existing and new MMS activities.
  • As required, coordinate the preparation of accountability reports for stakeholders including funding bodies.
  • Perform other duties as required
  • Open and close the Shed every day

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

  • A tertiary qualification in Community Development (or other relevant qualification) and/or significant community development experience is highly desirable
  • Relevant experience in the development, operation, delivery and evaluation of community based initiatives in a community setting.
  • Demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to, the Men’s Shed philosophy and practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to network, work with and relate well to a diverse range of stakeholders including MMS members, community organisations, local businesses and government.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion.
  • Proficiency in Information Technology including Microsoft Office.
  • Management of Volunteers

Pre-requisites

  • Full Victorian Driver’s Licence
  • Police Check
