Modernism and Disillusionment Book Club

Getting Started- I will do a brief presentation about these novels: Catcher in the Rye, Catch 22, On the Road, The Things They Carried, Death of a Salesman, Slaughterhouse 5, and Flow My Tears the Policeman Said. Four to five people will be in each group. Students will vote on the books from 1 being their top choice to 8 being their lowest choice. I will then study the votes and create the groups:

Reading the Text- While reading the text students will have to find 10 significant quotations and write them on note cards or sticky notes.(Like you did on the jungle). Students should be finding quotes as they read not going back after finishing the novel and picking quotes. Also, while reading you must complete two journals will be based on the reading of your novel, 6 total journals. Each journal entry should include a brief summary of what you read, an evaluation of the reading, and a question about the reading.

Also, twice a week, students will meet in class to discuss their readings. At each meeting, students will perform one of the given jobs listed below. After, each meeting students must turn in their given work. Each meeting, students must take on a different job.

Jobs during discussion: (May be hand written. If you are in a group of 4 ignore the recorder.)

  1. Biographer- The biographer’s job is to find information about the author of the novel and to analyze how the author’s life influenced the writing of the novel. The biographer must bring a new piece of information about the author’s life about ½ page. The biographer must also properly cite where they found the information.
  2. Historian- The historian’s job is to find information about the time when the novel was written. Examine the political, social, and cultural happenings of the time when the book was written and where the novel takes place. The information should be ½ page and properly cited.
  3. Questioner- The questioner’s job is to come up with questions for the group to answer. The questioner must come up with 5 questions that range over all of Bloom’s taxonomy with only 1 being a remembering question.
  4. Extender- The extender’s job is to examine how the novel is relevant to our lives today. The extender must find a news article of some sort that fits with the novel. The extender does not have to bring in the article. They may summarize it and cite where they got the article from or bring in a copy of the article.
  5. Recorder- The Recorder’s job is to keep notes on what is presented and what is discussed during the meeting. The recorder’s notes will be useful review material.

Final Project- Each group must come up with a 5-10 minute presentation where they teach the novel to the class. The presentation must cover the author’s background, the history of the novel, What the novel is about(don’t give away the ending or crucial parts), the purpose/message of the novel, How the novel relates to our lives today, and a review of the novel.

Each group must have a PowerPoint presentation and a poster or some type of visual aide. Each group member must speak and take part in doing the project.

Test:

At the end of the unit, there will be a test on the work studied during the unit and on your given novel. The test will have a few multiple choice, a few short answer, and two essays.
