Dear Student and Parents,

Course Description:Following the California Common Core State Standards and the California History-Social Studies Framework Students study major turning points that shaped the modern world from the Renaissance through the present. They trace the rise of democratic ideas and develop an understanding of the historical roots of current world issues, especially as they pertain to international relationships. They contrast the American experience of democratic ideals with those of other countries, understanding democracy is not practiced everywhere in the world. Students develop an understanding of current world issues and relate them to their historical, geographic, political, economic, and cultural contexts. Writing assignments include a research essay based on a theme addressed in the course.

Course Requirements:To successfully complete this course, students are expected to be motivated learners, participating fully in all activities and assignments. Students are required to take class notes and maintain a notebook for the duration of the course. Students are expected to be prepared daily for class discussions and overall progress through the course material by completing all reading and writing assignments, whether in class or as homework, and to be well prepared for all tests and quizzes. Successful completion of essays and research assignments is also required for every student.

Expected School-wide learning Results (ESLRS): In this course, Mary Star of the Sea’s ESLRs will be addressed through attention to the goals of Catholicism, Curriculum, Character and Community.

  • Participate in class prayer.
  • Respect themselves and others.
  • Accept responsibility for their choices.
  • Demonstrate academic integrity.
  • Work well with other student’s especially during cooperative learning activities.

Attendance: Per the Mary Star of the Sea High School Student-Parent Handbook, all school policies regarding excused/unexcused tardies and absences will be enforced. Students are expected to attend class daily, arriving on time for class. Students not seated in their assigned seats when the final bell rings are considered late and will be sent to the Attendance Office for an unexcused tardy admit.

Homework: Students will often be assigned reading from the textbook, and other sources, and are expected to take notes.

  • All work must be in compliance with the instructor’s directions regarding typed or hand-written work, style, presentation format, etc.
  • All written and homework assignments are due when they are collected in class.
  • Academic detention may be assigned when work is not completed to the teacher’s satisfaction or is not turned in on the assigned due date. It is at the teacher’s discretion to assign an academic detention and work completed due to an academic detention will be graded as late work.
  • Late work, defined as work turned in at any time after the assignment has been collected and including work turned in later in the class period, will be awarded a maximum 50% credit. No late work, including long-term assignments, will be accepted for full credit except in the case of a verified excused absence (as described in the Student-Parent Handbook). Late work will be accepted only during the quarter in which it was originally assigned and by the final acceptance date provided by the teacher near the end of each quarter.
  • Missing assignments and tests will receive a grade of 0 until they are made up. The 0 will remain if the work is not completed by the end of the quarter.
  • No work, tests or quizzes may be turned in or made up when a student has an unexcused absence from class. A long-term assignment will be graded as late work if turned in after missing class with an unexcused absence.
  • Inferior work or work which does not comply with appropriate standards will receive lesser credit, whether turned in on time or late.
  • Assignments required for submission to will not be graded until the teacher accesses the turnitin.com originality report AND the student has submitted a “hard copy” of the assignment per directions. A grade of 0 will be given if the assignment is not confirmed as submitted on turnitin.com and/or the student does not provide a copy of the assignment to the teacher.

Interactive Notebooks and supplies: students will keep all of their work in a spiral bound notebook. This interactive notebook is an important part of one’s grade in the course. Students should also have a flash drive available.

Testing policy: At the end of every unit there will be a test given that will cover all of the chapters covered. The test will be made up of multiple choice, and written questions. At the end of the semester there will be a Final exam.

It is a student’s responsibility after an excused absence to make up the test within one week. Only students with an excused absence will be able to make up tests or quizzes.

Grading policy: students will be graded on class work and homework, which will go in their interactive notebooks, individual and group projects, Essays, research, quizzes, tests, and class participationas well as the final semester exam, which will be comprehensive. Grades will be calculated on a cumulative point basis. Students will earn points based on the quality of work completed for each assignment or assessment. At the end of each grading period a grade average will be determined by dividing the total points possible by the points earned. Mary Star High School grade scale will be used. It is a student’s responsibility to make up all the missing work, including homework.

Teacher’s policy regarding students tardy to class: Mary Star High School tardy policy will be in effect. Students must be seated in assigned seats when the bell rings.

Use of turnitin.com: To assist teachers in determining the authenticity of student work, the school has authorized the faculty to use turnitin.com. Originality Check allows educators to check students’ work for improper citation or potential plagiarism by comparing it against continuously updated databases. Every Originality Report provides teachers with the opportunity to teach their students proper citation methods as well as to safeguard their institution’s academic integrity. When a student is involved in a cheating incident, Mary Star High School policies for plagiarism will be utilized.

Extra credit: Throughout the year extra credit will be offered in various forms. Each quarter extra credit will be offered to all students and recorded at the end of the grading period. Extra credit is designed to enhance a student’s learning; it will not take the place of class work or homework assignments.

Tutoring:Tutoring is available Tuesdays and Wednesdayor can be scheduled at a time agreeable to both the student and the teacher before or after school. Students in need of tutoring should speak with the teacher as soon as they detect a difficulty in grasping the course material or assignment. Peer study groups are often productive, especially in preparing for tests or semester exams.

Student Behavior and guidelines: Students are to be respectful of others and the classroom environment, be participants every day, be ready to work when the bell rings, be prepared with all necessary supplies, and be good citizens by following the school rules. When students do not complete assignments or abide by the classroom rules they will receive appropriate detentions and/or implementation of Mary Star High School discipline procedures.
