KHS MOBILE WIRELESS COMPUTER LAB

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

General Instructions:

  1. All teachers must be trained before using mobile lab.
  2. All teachers are required to move the lab to their room unless an SOS person is available. NOTE: Cart is HEAVY…two people may be needed to move cart.
  3. Reserve Mobile Lab in person with Media Specialist or EA at the Circulation Desk.
  4. Designate one student as a helper.
  5. Turn off two red power buttons on back of cart.
  6. Unplug both power cords from wall.
  7. Coil power cables in back of cart.
  8. In your classroom, position cart near an outlet and network jack.
  9. Plug both power cords into wall outlets.
  10. Plug gray network cable into network jack. IMPORTANT: One end of the network cable must be in Port 5 of the hub.
  11. If needed, you may plug your computer into an empty network port on the hub.

THE ABOVE MUST BE DONE BEFORE THE POWER TO THE CART IS TURNED ON!

  1. Users must have a valid Kingsford High School Username to log in to the computers. Logging in will give the user access to their personal space on the network (H:\ drive). Please remember to LOGOUT or SHUTDOWN when finished. Go to the START BUTTON and Click on Log Out or Shut Down. Closing the laptop will NOT log you out!
  2. If you require special or non-standard software to be installed on the laptops for classroom use, contact the Technology Director at least 2 weeks before it will be needed. You will be responsible for supplying licenses, media, and any documentation.

Data Projector

  1. If you are going to use the data projector, position it on a separate table or cart in your classroom aligned with your projector screen.
  2. Connect power to projector.
  3. Connect computer to projector with VGA cable.

Opening the Cart:

  1. Insert keys in upper and lower locks and unlock cart.
  2. Turn black knobs to open cart. Top knob turns counter clockwise and bottom turns clockwise.

Removing and Distributing Computers

  1. Instruct students to line up on one side of the cart.
  2. Carefully slide out each computer, unplug it and hand it to the student. Leave power cable on shelf.
  3. Continue distributing computers to students BY COLUMN.
  1. Students will remove the computer from the computer cart and carefully carry it to their desk.
  2. BEFORE TURNING ON ANY COMPUTER, read the STUDENT USE POLICY to your class.
  3. Open the computer by pressing on the silver button on the front of the computer.
  4. Press the power button.
  5. Once the computer boots to the Novel Login screen enter username and password.
  6. Launch applications from the Novel application launcher.
  7. All students must save their work on their H: drive (home directory) on the network.
  8. Approximately seven to ten minutes to the end of the hour, instruct students to shut down the computer. (Start menu, Shutdown).
  9. Once the computer is off, close the lid and carefully bring the computer back to the cart.
  10. Carefully insert the power cord into the back of the computer and slide the computer onto the shelf.
  11. If teacher is finished with the cart they should return it to the Media Center.

STUDENT USE POLICY

It is the responsibility of the classroom teacher to teach students the proper use and care of the laptop computer. Some of the items that must be reviewed with students include:

  • The Mobile Wireless Computer Lab is governed by the Breitung Township Schools Internet Acceptable Usage Policy.
  • No Horseplay around the computers.
  • Do not touch the monitor.
  • Do not attempt to clean the monitor.
  • Students should come to class with clean hands.
  • Students must use their own username and password.
  • When student is finished using the computer the computer should be returned to the cart.
  • Playing games is not permitted.
  • Downloading software is not permitted.
  • Internet usage is available for academic and educational purposes only. Chat rooms and E-Mail in any form is not permitted.
  • Shut down the computer at least seven minutes before the end of the hour so that there is enough time for all computers to be returned to the cart.
  • If the student needs to leave their desk, they should put the computer back in the cart or on a table or counter top in the classroom. Do not leave computers unattended on student desks.
