Description of Dances

Heather/Stacey:

This piece incorporates lots of acting into a fun and energetic hip hop piece to a compilation of Missy Elliott songs. If you like looking hot and being stupid on stage at the same time, this is your dance!

Michelle:

This piece is about how everyone (at times) can be in their own little world and sadly forget about others around them. Whether they don't listen, or don't care, or aren't capable of seeing, or are too proud to look. We can get so wrapped up in the moment, or ourselves, that we can't see past it and either we get hurt or we hurt others by our actions (or inactions). It's not so warm and fuzzy as my pieces usually are, but I'd like to venture out of my norm a bit. The song definitely has a sadness to it, but it is full of emotion, and I love the sound - it makes me want to be creative with my movement. I'm looking for dancers that are comfortable with modern movement, yet have a pretty sold base in either jazz or ballet. And obviously you have to love to dance! =)

Derek:

It goes without saying that this piece is gonna be hot! I’m also looking for a girl to just walk on stage to flirt with the guys. The general theme is that the guys try to impress the girl... something like that :p The beginning will be very smooth, a slow jam. Then it's gonna fade out and go into “What's Your Flava”, which is gonna be a slight contrast with a faster beat and sharper movements.

Janet:

This is a fun, high energy jazz piece.

Ji:

This is a Pulp Fiction themed dance with Pulp Fiction characters. It will be SUPER goofy piece with ALOT of "face performing." Most of this dance will be about face expressions. Also, you can't be afraid of embarrassing yourself. If you have any shame whatsoever... don't do it for your own sake.

Moira/Anna:

We might need a few dancers just to do a little hip hop so please pref this and write, I do not tap, if you are interested in doing a hip hop section. We also will adjust the tap level according to the dancers so please try out if you would like to tap.

Sheba:

The specific style and level of this dance will depend upon the dancers.

Amelia/Liz:

This piece is designed for dancers of many levels. It’s a chance for beginners to learn by dancing with more advanced dancers and for more seasoned dancers to just have some fun. If you are a beginner, we will expect you to work hard and be dedicated to improving. The choreography will vary by song from funky and sexy to energetic to silly to very cool.

Liz:

I am looking for dancers with lots of energy who can be angry, gangster, homeboy, and smooth all at the same time. I need girls who can dance like boys, but still look like girls (if that makes any sense). Style is most important to me, so I will expect my dancers to really put in the time and effort it takes to get it right. Getting the moves right is a given of course.

Stacey:

A classical pointe variation, most likely Balanchine.

Jordan:

Smooth with attitude. Style will be a combination of popping, gliding, and isolationism. Some Breakdance influenced moves will sneak there way in as well, along with c-walking. Concentration will be on footwork - glides, stepovers, etc. Clubbish type dancing - in other words you won't be leaping halfway across the stage or flailing you arms in huge loops. I'm looking for people who are willing to act like they are badass, because they will look it. Warning for the faint of heart: You probably will have to touch someone of *GASP* the opposite sex in this dance. You're not going to have to marry them or anything, it’s just a dance, but if you are uncomfortable with this type of thing I recommend talking to me first before you jump headlong into things.

Irene:

We'll begin working in silence creating a vocabulary of body language and gestures that accompany thoughts of home, comfort, catastrophe and destruction. Either we will select music as the movement develops or a friend will compose it. In the beginning of term - the first 2 weeks of rehearsals I'd like to meet twice a week for 1.5 hrs to create a lot of material and then we'll tone it down to the normal once a week to compile and rehearse.

Drea:

You know how it goes when you're at the club: everyone's got something to prove. I’m picturing thugged out fellas and sassy, independent ladies, battling it out to prove who truly is the shit! “Guy vs. girl" meets "breakdance/b-boy style" (may possibly meet up with "1970s disco funk" on the way)...

Jessica:

This dance is to tango music, but it is not a tango piece - I just liked the music. It will have a few Spanishy accents but no real "tango" dancing. A lot of my ideas involve sections of people dancing to different levels/instruments so it will look much fuller with the group than what I can do alone for showcase. The choreography is based on ballet but it's more free and pedestrian than classical ballet.

Christina:

Style will be dancehall bOOty.... (a fusion of contemporary pop and reggae with extensive use of the gluteus maximus). Looking for dancers with confidence and that aren't afraid to shake what cha momma gave ya!

Augusta:

A modern dance with wall-building. Some contact/partner dancing with large group parts and some solos. I'd like to hold rehearsals for 1.5 hours, if possible to work on technique and improv.

Bettina:

An advanced hip hop piece for girls with lots of body rolls and a combination of sharp and fluid movements.

Christopher-Paul:

This tango piece will be designed for 2 dedicated dancers. A tango is traditionally done with a male and female or with 2 females, but 2 males would be unique and encouraged as well. Dancers will be expected to practice outside of rehearsal time.
