Principal’s Letter

Welcome to Lakeland Elementary! We would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone to our school. It is one concerned with the well being of each individual that belongs to it, and it is one to be proud of.

This handbook has been prepared to answer many common questions concerning the rules and regulations of Lakeland Elementary. This school belongs to all of us, so we all need to work together in an orderly manner to ensure that our children get the best education possible.

I believe that all of our students have potential. It is our duty when they come to school to find their area of potential and nurture it. Every student can, and needs to, find success when they come to school to give them the love for learning that they need to be lifetime learners. I believe that we have a qualified staff that is willing to find each child’s gift and help develop it.

We will provide an atmosphere conducive to learning and we welcome you to join us and offer your child the support they need to be successful. I am looking forward to a great year! Please feel free to contact me for a meeting if there is a need, my door is always open!!

Mission Statement

The Lakeland R-III School District will prepare and empower students to become contributing members of a democratic society with high moral standards and who take responsibility for their own actions.

Vision Statement

The Lakeland R-III School District is known for its unified commitment to its students. An enthusiastic faculty implements a diverse, authentic curriculum utilizing the latest technology and innovative instructional strategies to prepare students for the world of work or post-graduate education. Experiencing a very low student/teacher ration, the faculty provides an exciting school environment, which is designed to be interactive with the surrounding community and the world.

The Lakeland community is extremely involved with the school district. The community shares a common purpose, pride and commitment to provide all learners a broad range of experiences and opportunities for excellence. Parents and other community partners are involved in helping students, pre-school through 12, through daily, meaningful interaction in the classroom and in community settings.

Lakeland students are enthusiastic and successful, possessing a strong sense of self-worth and accomplishment. They are highly sought after by employers and higher education institutions and all students leave with the skills necessary to succeed in a democratic society. Lakeland experiences a 100% graduation rate, and students are regarded by all as hard working, responsible, and having high moral values.

Recognizing that the physical environment can dramatically impact success, the Lakeland schools are safe, technologically rich, and appealing for students, teachers, parents, and the participating community. Buildings are clean, colorful, and well supplied with the latest equipment to support the efforts of all and to have a positive impact on the success of Lakeland students. The Lakeland R-III schools are a wonderful place to learn.

Profile

Lakeland R-III gained its own identity in the fall of 1976. Lowry City and Deepwater consolidated to form one school system. Located off Highway 13, between Lowry City and Deepwater the campus became the realization of a dream. In the fall of 1997, a new building opened its doors to house grades K-6. In the fall of 2002, students in grades 5-8 moved to a new middle school building on campus allowing for the growing number of students.

The school, however, is much more than a building. It is over 230 exciting young people growing, learning, and maturing. It is dedicated educators and a board of education leading our young people through many varied experiences and accomplishments. It is bus drivers, custodians, cooks, secretaries and aides all helping the teachers and students achieve their potential.

It is concerned and cooperative patrons and parents all working together to make Lakeland R-III Elementary, a school, where dreams become reality and where a vision will keep us growing.

The Lakeland Board of Education Commitment Statement

Reaffirmation of Faith: Believing in America’s democratic processes, we, the members of the Board of Education, having been elected by the citizens of this community, hereby reaffirm our faith in the Lakeland R-III School System.

Educational Opportunities: Seeking to serve the best interests of all students at Lakeland, we declare publicly our aim to provide the highest educational opportunities for each and every one of our young people to the end that they may find challenge, inspiration, and success limited only by their own potential and ambition.

Best Teachers Available: In providing these opportunities, we shall continue our endeavor to discover, attract, and hold the best teaching talent available. To be successful in this quest, we shall offer professional salaries and other opportunities and benefits comparable to those available in school systems similar to ours.

Program of Quality: Respecting the administrators selected to supervise and direct the program of education, we shall encourage them by every honorable means to maintain an educational program of quality.

The Key Figure: Realizing that the key professional figure in all education is the classroom teacher, we shall exercise the power and authority vested in us to insure their freedom to teach under truly professional conditions.

Parents Invited: Understanding the concern and interest of parents whose children are in this district, we shall invite them and all other interested citizens to attend board meetings, visit the school, participate in appropriate activities and confer with teachers and school officials.

The Community: Recognizing our legal and moral obligations to the community, we shall strive most diligently to manage the schools in a sound and economical manner, to avoid unnecessary expense, to shun extravagance and wherever desirable to call on citizens to sit in on such deliberations in advance of decisions.

School Hours

School is in session between 8:30 a.m. and 3:16 p.m. However, as the buses unload at 8:15, classes may have morning work before 8:30. Parent cooperation is requested in observing these times. If you need to speak to a teacher, please contact the office to leave a message. The teachers are busy all during the day and will contact you as soon as possible.

Also, try not to call staff at home unless it is an emergency. Please respect the fact that when they are at home, that is their personal quality time with their family.

Arrival Time: Students should not be in the building before 8:00 a.m. If a student does not ride the bus they should report to the elementary library between 8:00-8:15. Students will be dismissed to go to their classrooms at 8:15.

Bus Unloading: Buses will begin unloading students when all the buses have arrived at approximately 8:15. Buses will be loaded and unloaded on the South end of the building by the playground.

Tardies: Any student who arrives after 8:30 a.m. must report to the office for a tardy slip before being allowed in the classroom. Please try to ensure that students are on time for school. If tardiness is a problem, corrective measures will be taken after examining the situation. All tardies will count against perfect/excellent attendance.

Early Leave: If a parent needs to pick up a student before regular dismissal time, the student must be signed out in the office. The adult picking up the student must get a check out slip from the office and present it to the teacher before taking the student. The teacher will not dismiss a student without the check out slip.

Dismissal Procedure: Elementary students are dismissed approximately at 3:16 p.m. If there is to be ANY change in a student’s regular procedure for going home, there needs to be a note brought to the office or a phone call from a parent/guardian. Word of mouth from the student will not be enough to change the student’s regular bus route. If there is no prior contact made, the student will be sent on their REGULAR route. Please keep these changes to a minimum to limit confusion. Make contact with the office as soon as you are aware of the need for a change, otherwise we CANNOT guarantee that the message will be delivered in time. TO GUARANTEE BUS CHANGES ARE DELIVERED IN TIME, PLEASE CALL THE OFFICE BY 2:00. The end of the school day is often very busy, early changes would help guarantee the notes are delivered.

Parking and Student Pick-Up Procedures

North Side: The North side of the building by the elementary front entrance is where students will be picked up and dropped off if they are not riding the bus.

South Side: The South side of the building by the elementary playground is where the buses will load and unload. Please do not park in this area for the safety of all children. These doors will remain locked at all times.

Student Pick Up: Students will be released as their classes leave to load the buses. They will go to the North elementary entrance where a staff member will be located. Parents will need to sign out their students. Students in grades 5 and 6 may be signed out at the north doors by Central Office. Please do not wait for your child outside their classroom. We need the hallways clear for bus loading. Records will be kept of students being picked up.

Student Records

Lakeland Elementary follows procedures for all student records as outlined in the District Board Policies. Legal names will be used for all school documents.

Enrollment

New students in grades K-6 should be enrolled through the elementary office when they arrive in the district. Please bring the following information when you enroll your child:

·  Student’s State Birth Certificate

·  Student’s Social Security Card

·  Student’s Immunization Record

·  Address and Telephone Number of Previous School

·  Proof of Residency

·  New Address and Phone Number

To attend Lakeland, a student must be a resident of the district. To be considered a resident, the pupil must both physically reside within the school district and be “domiciled” within the school district. Missouri law states that the domicile of a minor child (under 18 years of age) shall be the domicile of the parent, or a court-appointed legal guardian. This means that a child must be living with a parent or a legal guardian that lives within Lakeland R-III school district to attend school at Lakeland.

Students will begin attending class the day following enrollment if all paperwork is in order. Students, who will be in Kindergarten, should pre-enroll during the announced date and time for Kindergarten Round Up. No student will be allowed to attend school without proof of current immunizations, birth certificate and social security card.

Attendance

Missouri Compulsory Attendance Law requires all students of ages 7-16 to be in regular attendance. Regular attendance is important to academic success. Education is a total process based upon continual communication and shared responsibilities among parents, students, teachers, and the school. As students mature and progress through the educational system, they should increasingly assume responsibility for regular attendance. However, parents have a legal and moral responsibility to require regular attendance at school. Any problems with attendance on the part of the student will be investigated and acted upon promptly.

A school absence is defined as not being present at school for all or part of a regular school day. Any absence due to a student’s participation in school sponsored activities will not be recorded as an absence.

Truancy is defined as a deliberate absence from school on the part of the pupil with or without the knowledge of the parent/guardian and for which no justifiable excuse is given. Excessive truancy may be referred to the respective county juvenile office after the parent/guardian has been notified of the student’s activities and given a chance to improve the situation. The final decision on notification of the juvenile office is the discretion of the school. Section 210.115 R.S.Mo. mandates reporting to the Division of Family Services when there is reasonable cause to suspect that a student’s non-attendance is due to the educational neglect of the parents/guardians.

Excused Absences: Absences will be excused in the following instances: (Must be verified by a Dr. /Dental note, parent phone call on the day of absence, parent note on the day of absence or the following day.)

·  When the student is ill

·  Personal or family issues

·  Funerals

·  School Sponsored Activities (will not be recorded as an absence)

·  Pre-Arranged Absences - For any absence three days or longer (request pre-arranged absence form from the office before absence.)

·  After 5 days absences a semester, a Dr.’s note is necessary in order for the absence to be excused.

It is the responsibility of the students/parents to ask the teacher for make-up work. Students will have one day for each day of excused absence to make up assignments.

Unexcused Absences: An unexcused absence is defined as one which is known by the parent/guardian, but does not fall in one of the categories listed under “excused” or is not approved by the school in advance of the absence. Truancy and Out of School Suspension are considered unexcused absences. A student will receive a zero for work missed during all unexcused absences.

The parent/guardian must contact the office to report the reason for a student’s absence. If the school has not been contacted, then the school will call the home and/or work to verify the absence. If the school is unable to contact the parent/guardian regarding the student’s absence, then a note must accompany the student on the day of returning in order to be excused, written and signed by the parent/guardian, giving the reason for the student’s absence. Otherwise, the student will receive a zero for all work missed during unexcused absences.
