Continued unserved detentions may result in additional consequences and/or suspension from school.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

If your child will be absent or tardy, please call the office at 284-8007 to inform us. The Missing Children’s Act requires parents to call or otherwise notify the school in advance of the student’s absence. A student who is tardy will stop by the office so his or her name can be taken off the absence list.

Upon every child's return (regardless of a phone call), a written excuse must be sent to the school and given to the homeroom teacher. The excuse must be from a parent/guardian, doctor, dentist or court system.

If a note is not received within 3 days of your student's return, the absence may be considered unexcused permanently. After 5 unexcused absences, the student's parent/guardian will be contacted by the school designee. After 10 absences (unexcused or excused), a doctor's note will be required for all further absences; otherwise they will be considered unexcused.

By the order of the Juvenile Court system, any excessive tardiness that contributes to a failing grade in any academic area, may result in a referral to the court. Excessive tardies are at the discretion of the building administrator. This same policy will be followed for students who have excessive early dismissals that contribute to a failing grade.

Please be advised that early dismissals and tardies count towards excellent attendance.

Excused Absences: Personal Illness, Death in family

****** Vacations are not excused absences. *******

Excused Tardies: Doctor/Dentist appointment, court

Appearances and counseling appointments

****** Oversleeping, car trouble or missed the bus are NOT excused. *******

ILLNESS

Should I keep my child home today? Yes, if he/she has:

___Diarrhea

___Severe cough

___Severe cold

___Undetermined rash

___Temperature of 100 degrees or higher

___Sore throat-difficulty swallowing

___Red, watery, burning, itching eyes

___Vomiting during the past 24 hours

___ Fever within the last 24 hours

___Lice in hair

The above symptoms/conditions may mean the start of a communicable disease or nuisance condition that could affect other children in your child’s classroom. Also, your child may be too sick to learn in school that day.

In fairness to ALL children, please keep your child home until you can determine what may be developing. Contact the school’s nurse if you have any questions.

MEDICATION AT SCHOOL

In most cases, medication can be given on a schedule at home. If your doctor says there is a need that it is given at school, please call and discuss the details with our school nurse (phone #284-6689). Medication WILL NOT be dispensed at school without a completed Medication Administration Request form from your child’s doctor with the doctor’s signature. Over the counter medication and cough drops CAN NOT be given to children without a doctor’s written authorization.

SICKNESS OR ACCIDENT AT SCHOOL

Each student will receive an emergency card the first week of school. It is extremely important that it be completed and returned to school immediately. Be sure to include a phone number where someone can be reached in case of an emergency. Also, remember to let us know if telephone numbers change during the course of the school year. Minor bumps or abrasions will be taken care of at school. Parents will be notified if something serious occurs.

FORMS NEEDED FOR ENROLLMENT

Registration is now centralized at the Elyria High School. When registering your child for school, a copy of the child’s birth certificate, immunization records, 2 proofs of residency, custody papers, and MFE/IEP/504 Plans, if applicable, need to be made available to the school at the time of enrollment.

TREATS/CELEBRATIONS

All treats and celebrations must be pre-approved by the classroom teacher. Treats will be passed out at the student’s lunch time. Treats and birthday celebrations will not be held during academic time. It is best to send pre-packaged treats that are labeled with ingredients and can be easily passed out at a lunch table. Please be advised we have many students with allergies. NO latex balloons and/or large decorations will be allowed in the building.

FIRE AND TORNADO DRILLS

Throughout the school year, students are given safety instructions that include fire, tornado and lockdown drills. Fire drills are held monthly; tornado drills are held monthly during tornado season; and lockdown drills are practiced several times throughout the year. Procedures are posted in each classroom and children are expected to remain quiet and orderly during drills.

COMMUNITY COMPUTER LAB

Franklin offers parents of students free access to computer use in our Community Computer Lab. Please call the office to find out available hours of operation.

DISCIPLINE POLICY

Expectations in school, on school property and on the bus are that students are to behave in a manner that displays self-control and respect for others. If a staff member feels a student’s behavior warrants an office visit, your child will carry home a letter stating the discipline issue and the consequence. Parents/Guardians must sign the letter and have their child return it the following school day. If the letter is not returned the next day, further consequences may be applied.

Examples of consequences: Lunch/Recess Detention

Morning Detention

Written Assignment

Alternate Classroom Placement

Out of School Suspension

Parent/Student/Teacher/Administrator

Conference

Franklin will have morning detentions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00am to 8:30am. All students will need to have their own transportation. In addition to traditional consequences, poor student behavior may result in denial of a field trip, assembly, or other school-related activity. Students may not be permitted to participate on a field trip for the following reasons:

* No name tag on field trip day

* Excessive absences

* Unpaid fines (including library fines)

* Has repeated office referrals

* Has earned a suspension or alternate room assignment

* Unserved detentions

**Some Behaviors will be an immediate office referral.

**Consequences are cumulative, so you may earn loss of recess, lunch detention, and after school detention all in the same day.
