Course Description & Objective:
The Major emphasis of this course is to prepare students to design and construct ready- to wear garments and apparel. Advanced instruction is given in designing and drafting patterns for standard sizes; selecting proper fabric, cutting fabric, stitching fabric, applying finishes and notions to garments and apparel. Students will use various methods and techniques that are essential in the Fashion Industry, which include variety of textile arts and crafts, including embroidery, tapestry, quilting, patchwork and appliqué. The course provides an overview of the apparel and fashion industry and its related careers. Linked learning opportunities exist between this course and courses in social science, ELA, and math. The content of this course is aligned with the Model CTE Standards and California High School Academic Core Content Area Standards.
The text book for this class is 9 HEADS by Nancy Riegelman
Students will work independently in drawing and creating meaningful designs. Students will combine ideas from fashion periods or decades to create meaningful collections.
Students will create a series of designs for the upcoming semester fashion show. To get a grade the student has to work and participate in the upcoming Winter Fashion Show.

Spiral Sketchbook for designs and small composition book for note taking, color pencils
Carrying case or storage box (tool box)
UNIVERSAL NEEDLES (THEY FIT IN ANY SEWING MACHINE)
8” Fabric Scissors and black and White thread spools for sewing, bobbins
Small scissors to undo stitching
A Measuring tape (99 cents store)
Pins and needles to pin garments, Pin cushion/container fabric marking pen
Patterns: easy to sew patterns (can be a dress, shirt, skirt , jacket or pants) Fabric to construct your garment (leave this for later)
Sewing machine needles: Universal size and heavy duty
Some materials can be found at the 99 cents store, others at Jo-Ann Fabrics or Walmart
THE ABOVE ITEMS ARE EXTREMELY IMPORTANT IF YOU DON’T HAVE THEM, YOUR ABILITY TO COMPLETE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE IMPAIRED
Grading Scale and Policy:
Class grades are determined through a combination of tests, in class projects, labs, and participation in a Fashion Show. Up to 10% participation is awarded through teacher’s discretion of student attitude, attendance and overall behavior.
Grading Scale:
F / D / C+ / B+ / ABelow 60% / 60-69 / 70-79 / 80-89 / 90-100
EXTRA CREDIT
Students should not rely on extra credit to improve their grades. Extra credit may be offered from time to time to the entire class. Extra credit will never be given on an individual basis.
Assessment of Learning: Through In Class Projects/ Fashion Show/ Multiple Choice Tests

Classroom Behavior Expectations and Academic Integrity: Students are expected to be attentive, respectful, prepared and diligent in the classroom and in their preparation for class. Monroe High School Policies are enforced.
- Follow the 3 R’s Respect for Self, Respect for Others and Responsibility for all your actions and your grade. RESPECT for your peers, your teachers, and yourself is required and expected!
- Purses and bags on the floor please! Otherwise I will find an area in the back of the room for them.
- Stay on task (no sleeping, disruptive talking or foul language is allowed)
- Absolutely NO PHONES, IPods or any other electronic devices (Anyone caught texting or using their phone, iPod, camera, PSP, or any other electronic device will have it removed and receive a detention).
- The back door should not be used to come in or go out for ANY reason.
- The classroom phone, filing cabinets, and teacher’s desk are for Mrs. Haddad’s use only.
- Do not throw papers on the floor, please stand up and throw them in the trash can.
- Leave the desks, walls, chairs, or anything else as you found them when you entered. If you do see “graffiti” or something out of place, please alert Mrs. Haddad.
- NO eating, gum chewing, juices or food is allowed! (except bottled water)
- Cheating and plagiarism will NOT be tolerated!
- NO HATS ALLOWED IN CLASS!
Discipline:
First time a rule is broken a warning will be given (one on one with the teacher student signature required)
2nd time a rule is broken a call home and a conference will be scheduled with parents/ guardians
3rd time rule is broken parents will be schedule to come in and sit with student in class
Attendance Policy: LAUSD policies apply.
Course Agenda and Outline: The purpose of this course is to advance students’ knowledge of fashion design throughthe elements and principles of design as they pertain to fashion. Design terminology forapparel and recognition of design styles are also included as components of the course.
Students will be required to demonstrate creative use of inspiration and designexperimentation through various projects and a design journal. Students will also berequired to learn and will be assessed on their knowledge of terminology, styles andapplicability of the elements and principles. Students will be required to provide some
materials required for their projects.

*To receive a Final Grade in Class student must participate in two fashion shows conducted in school grounds. One in the Fall Semester and another in the Spring Semester; student must create garments for the show either by using recyclable materials or regular fabric.
My son/daughter is aware of the responsibilities and rules stated above and will participate in class activities. If the student is not present or participate in class activities he/she will not receive a passing grade.
