MUSIC NOTE

The text for our Hymn of the Day, Rise Up, O Saints of God! (ELW 669) is the outcome of a deep process of revision. The original text Rise Up, O Men of God! – published by the Presbyterian periodical Continent in 1911, was no longer perceived as containing acceptable language for the church. Norman O. Forness (1936-2009) a history professor and devout Lutheran born in Minot, ND, took the text and shaped it to form what we sing today. This newer version of the text saw its first printing with the publication of the Lutheran Book of Worship (the Green LBW) of 1978. The tune FESTAL SONG was composed by organist William H. Walter (1825-1893) and also is used in another hymn in the ELW: Arise, Your Light Has Come (314). Born in Newark, NJ, Mr. Walter probably never thought this tune would be his greatest contribution to Christian hymnody.

PRAYER PARTNERS

Each week the Prayer Partners invite you to pray with us for a specific concern. Today is Father’s Day, so let’s pray for all fathers. Pray for those who are new fathers, as they find their way in parenting. Pray for all fathers as they seek to raise their children in ways that are pleasing to God. Pray for fathers in families that have been broken by divorce, that they are able to be a part of their children’s lives. Pray for fathers who are estranged from their children, that they might find their way back together.
