Global Education Committee Meeting

Attendees: Mitchel Sorin, Peggy Bulla, Vickie Thompson, Phyllis Boone, Brinda Caldwell, Kate Bove, Gigi Derballa, Lisa Evans, Melanie Parham, CrisHarshman, Valerie Watts, Marilee Bush, Jonathan Ross, and Copper Coggins. Absent: Pete Kennedy and Jennifer Hill.

  • Mission Statement: Our mission statement is “To bring awareness of global issues to our campus – to study, explore, and be informed.” Includes both curriculum and non-curriculum activities. This committee will meet three times a semester.
  • Introductions were given.
  • Kelly announced that George E. Stuart will be giving a lecture on the Mayans in Ferguson Auditorium on Thursday, October 18 at 8:00 pm. This program is connected to our Sister Cities organization.There are 20 tickets for students and 20 for staff. If anyone on the committee is interested in attending, please contact Martha Shanks.
  • Our Global Ed Website Link:
  • Culinary International luncheons/dinners: October 25 is France; South America will be on November 8; Spain is on November 29. Melanie and her French students created a wonderful brochure for last year’s French luncheon/dinner. The brochure featured the menu for the day and a short introduction about France. If you are interested in attending luncheons together as a group, contact Kelly.
  • Department of Education: International Education Week is November 12-16. Link for resources/ideas:

  • Enhance/Maintain GE website: Jonathan and Phyllis (update/add bios, reorganize).
  • International Education Week (11/12 -16, 2012): Organize panels on how to serve abroad, global careers, etc. Gigi, Peggy, and Melanie will look into this. Include International Day with this.
  • Partner with Local Organizations:
  • Asheville Sister Cities ( Shelly White is on the Valladolid Sister Cites sub-committee; Jennifer is on the San Cristobal sub-committee (Kate will be joining next semester). Asheville Sister Cities has recently added Scotland: Kelly traveled to Perthshire, Scotland during the summer, with others from Asheville, and has joined the ASC Scotland sub-committee and will be presenting a heritage workshop on behalf of the Global Ed Committee.
  • World View ( ): Kelly will be attending the Community College Symposium in Chapel Hill on Nov. 14 and 15. This is a program that was created by UNC-Chapel Hill and that requires administrators from member colleges to attend, along with other campus faculty, where they can bring back valuable information that can be used in the classroom immediately. They have a plethora of resources available on their website as well.
  • NC Global Learner Consortium: This organization focuses on networking with other community colleges in NC. The GLC is another resource that sponsors an annual meeting where representatives present and share what they are doing on their campus in regards to global education. Phyllis and Kelly are on the GLC Western Region email list and will forward any forthcoming information as it is received.Laura Wolpert at Caldwell Community College is the organizer.A-B Tech has hosted the GLC twice in the past 4 years.
  • Film/Speakers’ Series: Cris, Melanie, Lisa, Marilee, and Phyllis will work on this; may offer the speaker’s series in a visual format or through Skype if in other countries (Val’s son or Melanie’s brother).Cris suggested using an “ask me anything” site through a wiki or in some other format.
  • A-B Tech “Day of Service” (to coincide with Earth Day in April): Gigi, Mitchel, Lisa and Kelly will collaborate with Lloyd Weinberg, Coordinator for Service-Learning, and partner with a local business/organization. Gigi suggested including the honors program.
  • Promote Summer Abroad 2013 Trips (can include tips on packing, safety, raising money, etc.): Kelly, Marilee, and Kate will help organize this.
  • Professional Development Workshops: Kelly and Pete will offer their International Etiquette workshop during Entrepreneurship Week in February 2013.
  • Skype/Video Conferences with partners abroad: Maybe weave this in with the speakers program? Valladolid reps wanted to do some of this for their students. We can do this with the Ukraine, N. Ireland, and Scotland as well, if we wanted to.
  • PPT Series on Cultures: Phyllis. This features information on specific countries that includes topics covering food, clothing, music, entertainment, business ethics, etc. and is offered in a movie format. Japanese Culture is currently available on the GE website: (not discussed at this meeting).
  • Study Abroad 2013 summer potential trips and process update: Approval forms due by November board meeting. Kelly will meet with Mona to begin marketing. January 2013 there will be an Abroad Fair and programming.
  • Potential trips: Honduras (5/19-5/26) for Dental Hygiene. Marilee is conducting a Lunch & Learn on October 24 from 12-1. Carol Little will speak and talk about her trip and see who else in other departments are interested in participating; Italy (Sharon Trammel: art history); England/Ireland (Ellen Perry and Lisa Johnson: British Literature): Scotland (Kelly: heritage and other topics); Ecuador (Kate). Montreal trip: anyone can go on this. Melanie will forward info to add to webpage. These trips can include other NCCCs as well.
  • Other business:
  • Copper announced that there are competencies that we can use in compliance with the professional development we have planned. Copper is retiring after PD day and recommends that we replace her position on this committee with Page McCormick.
  • Kelly will send out To Do List and other information.
  • Peggy will share information with the committee from a publication that contains study abroad issues.
  • Brinda suggested that the Con Ed students who are taking a foreign language would be interested in attending some of these activities that we are planning. We need to make sure that they are included when disseminating the information.
