CrystalPalace
Minutes of the telephone meeting of December 15, 2004.
Present:
At CERN: D. Cockerill, C. Detraz, O. Teller, M. Scandurra, T. Camporesi
At RAL: K. Bell, J. Greenhalgh, J. Hill, A. Lodge
1)Opal frame mods
Interdependence of OPAL frame feet, OPAL rotation beams and turning frame design. Abramov FEA input needed urgently as next step. Justin: possibility of fixing the stiffening beams to the backplate rather than the OPAL frame.
For transport of Dees, assume the use of appropriate CERN transport with minimal extra attachments needed to the OPAL frames.
ACTIONS:
Justin to contact Abramov for FEA issues: effect of removing the last brackets, FEA of OPAL frame itself, C of G of system (Dee alone, Dee with OPAL frame)
Olivier/Mario to provide a suitable file format of the Euclid OPAL frame design for Abramov.
Mario to address problem of removing reinforcing bar/bolts from backplate (see EE note 358) perhaps by using right angled brackets instead.
2)Cooling
Pressure tests carried out by Claude on BP cooling pipes, to 20 bar. One leak found, welded and repaired by Jose.
ACTION:
In future all welding repairs to be carried out atthe CERN central workshop, by authorised welders, with a note toOlivier.
3)YE- trials
Despite the good survey data for YE-, the group agreed that a dry mount should go ahead and should include, as far as practicable, the use of the OPAL frames and a support platform a la Surkov. Uncut pipes on YE- may limit the extent of tests with the OPAL frame. Work likely to take 3 days at point 5. Minimal impact on Dummy Dee installation plans.
ACTION:
Ken to contact Lucien for logistics/dates
4)VPT gluing jigs
ACTION:
Claude, Mario to arrange a meeting with Etiennette.
5)Alveolar measurements
Agreed to use an SC assembly jig to check relative alveolar sizes. Student at CERN to help from 7-11 Feb 2005.
ACTION:
Justin to check whether Brian can come out before 7 Feb to setup assembly jig.
6)Bare SC production
Discuss once crystal contract placed with SIC (expected early 2005). Two Chinese will be sent from SIC for the long term, to interface with CERN, from 3rd week of Jan 2005.
7)Cable testing/installation
Kaftanov team laying cables – they have agreed to help with testing. Nikolai Golubev
running the teams. Testing:
DCS - borrow equipment from SPEC
HV - test equipment from RAL
LV- continuity tests needed for LV lines and control/sense lines
Optical- unclear
ACTION:
KenHVcable tester to be supplied from RAL
Wolfgang to contact Vesey for optical fibre testing equipment to be usedbefore and after installation.
8)Dee Integration - Dry assembly test
Design/procurements through 2005. Cooling bars to be shipped to UK to be welded into cooling blocks. Russian institutes interested to produce moderator. Moderator safety issues discussed with CMS GLIMOS, Chrisophe Schaefer – ongoing. First full Dee dry assembly not before 2006.
9)Dee rotation tooling
Nothing suitable found through C Ferrari. A design proposal has been made by Mario.
ACTION:
Mario to send drawings to Dave to put on web for discussion.
10)Dummy Dee installation in CMS
Apart from some bolts, all hardware is in hand. Dummy Dees already mounted on YE+. Preshower panels and cable tray items still to be mounted on YE+. A proposal to assemble all items on the dummy Dees for YE-, before mounting on CMS, was discussed. After the meeting Claude mentioned a problem of survey line-of-sight if the additional Dummy Deepieces are assembled beforehand – to be investigated.
11)Dummy SC tests on a Dee
Three dummy SCs have been received which were at TM. Using these to test positional spacer geometry will be discussed during John’s visit to CERN in 2005 for the YE- activities.
ACTION:
John and Claude
