1. Joris starts the meeting at 13:35 and participants introduce themselves
2. Experience of the different centers in studying microcirculation in past year
-Marilena Savoia: observer at this meeting
-Ozge Erdem with othters from Rotterdam: studying microcirculation in ECMO, cardiac surgery and heart failure. Currently camera device broke
-Willem de Boode: currently no study
-Javier Urbano: studying microcirculation in minipigs with shock
-Joris Lemson: two studies finished 1. healthy volunteers with LPS and 2. lamb with septic shock. In 2017 planning a ARDS study in lambs
3. Technical issues
Two systems are being used. The Microvision (Madrid) and Braedius (others). The last system has a better optical system but no automated software. Microvision has an automates system and automatic software (AVA4) but the experience from Madrid is not very positive. The Braedius device suffers from a motor failure, Rotterdam has currently no working device because of that. Apart from technical problems it is still a problem to get good images in children in the mouth.
It is identified that there are multiple problems with microcirculatory research in children
· technical issues with the devices (specifically from Braedius)
· analysis is difficult with both devices related to uncertainty of reliability of all software packages and uncertainty regarding the differences between the results of the two different systems. Related to both image quality and software
· Difficulty in acquiring images in young children in the mouth. In neonates the skin seems to work but only in the very small ones.
· Problems (adults) are being addressed in attached publications
4. Future research
It is acknowledged that we should try to collaborate more. Joris will send a survey to the “members” to see what would be possible in the near future. Would it be possible to gather images from several PICU’s together with clinical data? Images should be analyzed by an independent researcher.
5. Future of the working group
It is decided to continue the workinggroup, the participants feel this is useful. The next meeting will be at ESPNIC 2017 Lisbon.
Joris will send out a survey to all members to inquire:
· what research is being performed?
· what devices are being used, what are the problems encountered?
· are centers willing to share images?
· any ideas on multicenter studies?
· etc
Joris closes the meeting at 11:00
