Minutes of the Arlington Lions Club

Regular Meeting

April 1, 2010

Lion President Steve Harter called the meeting to order at 6:35 p.m. with the following members present: Lions Brenda Eggert, Marlys Gaucher, Steve Harter, Laura Maki, Darwin Mathwig, Nancy Mathwig, Eunice Rucks and Larry Sorenson.

Pledge

Lion Steve led the members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary’s Report of the March regular meeting, as presented via email, was approved.

The secretary’s report of the March 26, 2010 Board of Director’s meeting was approved as presented via email.

There was no Treasurers Report due to Lion Eunice’s computer problems.

Correspondence

American Diabetes Association sent a letter regarding diabetes camps. Lion Steve Harter will share the information with the school nurse due to privacy issues. Several youth from Sibley East have attended Camp Needle Point in the past. The district is now matching 50% of camp cost rather than $250 per camp. Monies donated towards camp fees also counts towards the Dream Catchers Award.

Tail twisting

Lion Laura Maki conducted the Tail twister drawing in Lion Pat Liebl absence. Lion Marlys Gaucher won the hospital foundation benefit tickets.

MN5M Convention

Lion Steve received the delegate registration cards for the MD5M Convention, April 23rd – 25th. Lions Eunice Rucks, and Darwin and Nancy Mathwig are attending and will serve as our delegates. Lion Nancy Mathwig will see to getting our delegates registered.

Project Reports

Track Meet

Lion Paul Wiemann will be needing workers for the Lions Track Meet on May 7th. Lion Steve agreed to be a timer again and Lions Eunice and Maynard Rucks and Darwin Mathwig will also help. Lions Pat Liebl and Laura Maki will be working in the Leos Mini donut stand.

Old Business

Joint Committee with Green Isle

Lion Laura Maki continues to work on the upcoming joint meeting with the Green Isle Lions Board of Directors. She reported that it has been difficult finding a date due to the busy schedules of members and that they hope to meet the first part of May.

Dram Shop Insurance

Lion Dan Hislop has written a letter to the city attorney making sure we have enough coverage for our Wine Tasting Event. Lion Nancy Mathwig said that our events are covered by LCI for 1 million and the District with .5 million. There was some question about this coverage since our Wine Tasting Event involves alcohol. We will await the response of the city attorney.

Summer Festival

Lion Darwin Mathwig reported this year’s festival will be held in the park so there are places to sit and there are plans to have a tent to provide shade for attendees. He also stated that there will be mention in the paper about the Lions Pork Chop Dinner on Saturday, June 18th, serving times will likely be 4 – 7 p.m. Menu will be: smoked pork chop, potato salad, baked beans, dinner roll and coffee. He suggested we make our own potato salad at the community center with members cooking potatoes. He will ask the fire department for the use of their gas grill since that worked well when the Sibley East Lions did the meal at the Sesquicentennial. He suggested we plan for 250 people and charge $8 per meal; with the chops costing about $2.70, he anticipates a profit of approximately $3 per meal. Lion Darwin is also working with the committee on entertainment ideas and will have things set up by our May meeting.

Zone Meeting

The Arlington Lions hosted the Zone 5 Meeting, last night, March 31st at the American Legion Building. Lions Laura Maki and Brenda Eggert chaired the event and reported that 57 Lions were in attendance and totally enjoyed the meal prepared by the American Legion members. A Raffle was held with the 10 packages of meat/brats purchased from Arlington Market and two boxes of various fruits and vegetables donated by Seneca thanks to Lion Paul Wiemann. After expenses we ended with a slight profit.

Walking Tacos Tournament Game on March 11

Lion Brenda Eggert said that between the weather being very foggy and a smaller crowd for this tournament game our sales were down. We also had a smaller turn out of Lion workers due to schedule conflicts and illness. Lion Steve Harter said that other conferences enjoy coming to Sibley East because food is served. Since this is more of a service project than a fund raiser we decided to continue. Lion Steve was directed to reserve the first home and tournament games for us again next year. Lion Dan Hislop will present a financial report at our next meeting.

New Business

Lion Aprons

Lion Dan Hislop suggested at the March board meeting that we consider purchasing new aprons to use at our fund raisers since the current ones are showing a lot of wear and looking tacky, plus we do not have enough for our members. He will present more information at our next meeting. Lion Nancy Mathwig said the current aprons were from approximately 1998.

DECA Request

A request from Ms. Hazelwood, Sibley East business instructor, for financial support on behalf of two Sibley East students attending a national competition was denied by the Board of Directors due to it not fitting our Guidelines for Gift Giving Policy.

Inter Club Visit

Lion Steve Harter will set up our inter club visit to the Henderson Lions with their President Lion Paul Reinitz. It was suggested we visit their May 5th meeting. There meetings are held at Hog Wild Restaurant in Henderson. Lion Steve Harter will inform our members of meeting time and RSVP deadlines. (After the meeting Lion Steve was informed by Lion Paul Reinitz that April 21st would work better for the club visit.)

Club Charter

Lion Darwin Mathwig shared that Winsted is chartering a new Lions Club on May 25th. As allowed in our Gift Giving Guidelines; Lion Brenda Eggert moved that we give a $25 gift, seconded by Lion Nancy Mathwig, MC.

After Prom Donation

Lion Eunice reported that the television for the After Prom Party has arrived and she received the bill for $371. We need to make sure we label it with our decal and a note stating it’s from the Arlington Lions Club is put on the box before it is delivered. Lion Dan Hislop ordered the decals and will be reminded that this needs to be done when he returns.

Father/Daughter Event

Lion Darwin Mathwig suggested that we should consider sponsoring a Father/Daughter Dance for the Sibley East area. We discussed possibly holding in the fall. Discussion followed regarding this being a club or joint adventure and theme. It was decided to look into it more as a club activity and keep it simple so as not to eliminate anyone from participating if it were to be a more formal event.

Lion Eunice Rucks moved we adjourn, seconded by Lion Brenda Eggert, meeting adjourned.
