i.  Library Reports

Mission Viejo Public Library: The Library is currently working on the testing and setup of Access 360 and e-Resource Central. Mission Viejo has also received a grant project for digital literacy.

Orange Public Library: The Library is currently working on some CIP projects with library impact fee money. They are looking into getting their two remote branch locations onto their fiber network. They are also looking into replacing all their wireless access points. The Library is just about to implement Gale reference e-Books for kids. They received a donation from their foundation to provide iPads to staff for use with outreach, storytime, and roving reference.

Orange County Public Law Library: The Library is considering customizing their catalog to add a hyperlink to each item’s record that will show its location on a map. They are also looking into the possibility of taking ownership of the Library’s phone system.

Yorba Linda Public Library: A new website redesign is in process. Once completed, the Library is hoping to match OPACs to the website’s templates to create a unified look and feel. Yorba Linda Public’s OPACs are currently using VuFind. The Library is hoping to upgrade to VuFind2. This will allow patrons to checkout Overdrive books directly from the catalog. The Library is also still looking for a login/timekeeping software. Finally, a new building is hopefully in the works.

Huntington Public Library: The redesign of the lobby area has been completed. The project included Installation of Biblioteca security gates and two self-check kiosks. Also, the circulation desks now have RFID pads. The Library is still in the process of RFID tagging the collection. Currently they are a little more than 50% complete. The Library is looking into getting an automated materials handling system. Also, the Zinio database service has been added to the Library’s offerings.

Newport Beach Public Library: A new Library Director has just been appointed. Newport Beach Public is resuming public training courses. Course topics include eBooks and databases. They are also adding a sound lab.

OC Public Libraries: OC Public Libraries now have Citrix at most branches. They are working with historical images and stories using CONTENTdm. Remote scanning events at various branches throughout the County are being held for this project. They are also rolling out Zinio and Mango. In additional, they now have some mobile hotspots for eBooks. They are also doing school outreach.

Fullerton Public Library: Fullerton Public is participating in a website redesign using Civica. They are also trying to put together different modules to make a mobile makerspace.

ii.  Training/Educational Programs for 2014

It was suggested by the SLS Executive Committee that the Technology and Tech Services Committee discuss the idea of doing some kind of training or staff development for all members of SLS. This would be something that would facilitate and increase communication between libraries in SLS. Several topics for training were discussed, including social media, digital literacy, minimum technical competencies, and makerspaces. Several SLSTTSC members expressed the sentiment that the training might have to be general because there are so many different library systems and setups.

An idea was put forth that training could be recorded, or be in a moodle-type setting. In addition to training, many members felt that the creation of communication tools might be of value. The idea of the creation of a wiki was brought up. Many members agreed that the implementation of a listserv might be beneficial, as well as the compilation of a list of each library’s databases and resources.

iii.  Committee Goals

The goals for this Committee need to be drafted and posted on the SLS website. Since not all members were present, it was decided to draft a list of goals and then have everybody vote on them next at the next meeting. Identified goals included the facilitation of communication and the sharing of information. Creating the manner/modality in which this communication will occur (listserv, etc.) is an additional goal. An additional possible goal could be the creation of a database or list of each library’s resources.

iv.  Host Library Presentation

Genesis Hansen presented Mission Viejo’s new storytime technology. This technology was the result of a Pitch An Idea grant. The technology includes mobile devices (mainly iPads) and Apple TV. It will be used for staff training, and parent education nights; some elements will also be incorporated into storytime. The technology will also be used for a hands-on parent/child iPad digital literacy program.

v.  Next Meeting(s)

Orange Public Library has offered to host the next meeting, with Placentia Public Library offering to be the backup location. The meeting is tentatively scheduled to take place either late April or early May, with the specific date/time to be decided in the future.

vi.  Agenda Building for next meeting/Adjournment

Agenda items for next meeting include approving the official goals, and discussion of the creation of a listserv. More specific breakout sessions or splinter meetings for libraries with common setups/etc. can occur if time allows.
