Conferences & Meetings
Reading Critical Conference
Overall very good. Some speakers much better than others. Sessions on Bibliotherapy (UK), the Reading Agency (UK) and retail librarianship
Data Collection & Analysis (Day 1)
Various presenters including the ABS and Ian Phillips who did LBC.
If you are looking for support for submissions you need to back up your presentation with data relevant to what you want to do.
Statistics can be ‘flexible’. Start with what you want to achieve and work backwards

Viclink Planning Day
Looking at the Viclink Strategic Plan and working on ideas for the new plan 2009-2012. Issues raised included advocacy and communication
Proposal to change name to Public Libraries Victoria, also reviewing the constitution.
Collections & Access Working Group
Cataloguing & End Processing specifications – good feedback. Is currently with the expert panel for revision
Collection Standards have gone to the Working Group for comment and are going back to the panel for review
Collaborative purchasing conversation is continuing
Round the Table
Bayside – RFID to be installed. Literary Festival on 16-25 May
Moreland – Implementing LibraryLink. Looking at why talking book loans are dropping
Mornington – Doing Best Value, any information that would help is much appreciated
Darebin – New website ( ) with new promotions. Reader development content being added soon
Melbourne – New LMS announced, installing Aurora soon. Council has announced 3 new libraries at Docklands, Southbank & Carlton
MooneeValley – New council CEO. Major restructure with new library manager to be announced. Council boundaries redrawn, affects funding and services across council. New reading blog!
Yarra Plenty – RFID tagging continuing. All self-serve – borrowers love it.
Kingston – Ordering totally online & staff selection once a fortnight
East Gippsland – New library manager. Omeo library opened
Hume – Converting Kwik cases to One-time cases. New public access computers throughout branches. Using PC reservation. New Dept manager with no library background. Genre labeling fiction collection.
Maribrynong – Refurbishment of Footscray. Also changing to One-time cases
Geelong – Have a new 5yr strategic plan. Newcomb opened after refurbishment and RFID. Geelong West still closed. Switched on LibraryLink
Melton – Opening of CarolineSprings library, a few teething problems but usage growing every day
Central Highlands – Going with Swift. New website
YarraCity – On Swift since Dec, a few problems but gradually working through them
Whitehorse–Doncaster is still in their temporary premesis and will be for a while. Launched internal staff wiki (
