Volunteer GED Coordinating Intern

Organizational Background: The Minnesota Literacy Council (MLC) recruits and supports volunteer tutors and teachers in adult literacy programs. These programs offer free classes for new immigrants and refugees, as well as life-long Minnesotans, who are learning Basic English, math or computer skills, or studying for the GED.

Purpose of Position: Want to gain valuable grass roots organizing and teaching experience? The Volunteer GED Coordinating Intern will collaborate with staff to support the GED program at the Minnesota Literacy Council- Northside Learning Center. This is an unpaid internship position.

Qualifications:

§  Experience teaching or tutoring highly preferred

§  Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills

§  Ability to maintain organized and detailed files

§  Dependable, prompt and able to maintain confidentiality

§  Basic computer, Internet, and office software skills necessary

§  Reliable transportation

§  Familiarity with adult education programs preferred

Training: 12-hour Tutor Pre-Service Training and orientation session with program staff.

Location: Minnesota Literacy Council- North Side, 611 Van White Memorial Blvd, Minneapolis, MN 55411

Time Commitment: Approximately 10-12 hours three-four days per week at the MLC- Northside, including time spent at outreach events. Outreach events range from 1-2 hours per month, including a very occasional weekend day. Schedule will be determined upon start and is flexible. This internship is for 6 months, with opportunity to extend.

Start Date: ASAP

Responsibilities include:

§  Work cooperatively with staff to recruit new volunteer tutors and teachers for adult GED prep programs.

§  Teach GED Classes and assist evening Volunteer Teachers in the classroom.

§  Schedule and Proctor GED Practice Tests.

§  Schedule new student registration appointments.

§  Represent MLC at volunteer recruitment fairs and other outreach events.

§  Create flyers and other communications materials.

§  Negotiate schedule with staff; arrive promptly when scheduled.

§  Assist in lesson planning.

§  Specific term of service project to be determined with Learning Center Coordinator.
