Mechanic
JOB TITLE:Mechanic
REPORTS TO:Transportation Supervisor

SUMMARY
The mechanic repairs and overhauls automobiles, buses, trucks, and other automotive vehicles by performing the following duties.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The mechanic is to:
- Follow standard procedures to occasionally perform unusual or difficult tasks to accomplish job assigned.
- Keep work areas free of hazardous conditions, e.g. grease/oil spills, excess supplies, etc.
- Ensure that work areas are clean and equipment, tools, etc., are properly stored before leaving work area at the end of the work day.
- Remove unit such as engine, transmission, or differential.
- Disassemble unit and inspect parts for wear on gasoline and diesel engines.
- Repair or replace carburetors, blowers, generators, distributors, starters, and pumps.
- Rebuild parts such as crankshafts and cylinder blocks.
- Rewire ignition system, lights and instruments panel.
- Reline and adjust brakes, align front end, repair or replace shock absorbers, and solder leaks in radiators.
- Mend damaged body and fenders by hammering out or filling in dents and welding broken parts.
- Replace and adjust headlights, and install and repair accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors, and windshield wipers.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Knowledge
The mechanic must:
- Have an extensive knowledge of the principles of diesel engines, gasoline engines, generators, vehicle electrical apparatus, power and aid functions, hydraulic mechanisms and braking systems.
Language Abilities
The mechanic must have the abilities to:
- Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Write routine reports and correspondence.
- Communicate concisely.
Mathematical Abilities
The mechanic must have the abilities to:
- Calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
- Apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Abilities
The mechanic must have the abilities to:
- Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Required
Applicant must have an Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school, or one to two years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
In addition, employee is required to:
- Possess a CDL.
- Successfully pass a required state physical.
- Pass State of Nevada annual bus drivers examination with a score of 75% or better.
- Successfully complete a twenty-hour training course required by Nevada State Department of Motor Vehicles and State Board of Education.
