Dear Mildred Dudley Peters Scholarship Applicant:
Thank you for expressing an interest in the Mildred Dudley Peters Scholarship offered by the Norfolk Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a non-profit organization with over 200,000 college-educated women whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world. The late Mildred Dudley Peters was a devoted member of our local chapter, Norfolk Alumnae, formerly known as Mu Sigma. She was the first African-American Supervisor for Negro Schools in Norfolk, Virginia. Mrs. Peters is noted for revising the curriculum for the teaching of history, geography, and government for grades four through seven in approximately ten schools. She was passionate about education and student achievement.
The Mildred Dudley Peters Scholarship is being offered in the amount of $5,000 to a graduating senior who will attend a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) in the fall. The scholarship will be earmarked for tuition only and will be mailed directly to the college or university where the recipient will attend upon completion of guidelines outlined in the application packet.
Our project/scholarship committee will review each complete application received by Norfolk Alumnae Chapter. Applications will be ranked and voted on by the membership. If you are selected as the recipient of the Mildred Dudley Peters Scholarship, you will be required to attend our annual Community Service and Academic Achievement Program where you will be officially introduced to the community as our scholarship winner. This event will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2015 and will be free of charge to you. The location and time will be provided at a later date. You will be allowed to invite family and friends to attend, but they must pay the ticket amount of approximately $18.00. The recipients will be required to sign a statement of acceptance and return it to the Project/ Scholarship Committee within fives days of receipt.
