PURPOSE: To evaluate each contestant’s preparation for employment and recognize outstanding students for excellence in Collision Repair
Contestant must provide safety glasses, boots, welding gloves, etc.
No phone calls please, all questions will be answered by e-mail
Official clothing requirements are not required here, but you may say a plain t-shirt or plain jeans, no printing.
EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS: CLOTHING: Please read and adhere to this important information about air: Contestant must bring an air hose with the fitting removed on the regulator side. Failure to do so will result in lost points. Host school will provide a fitting for thehose to connect to our regulators. No exceptions: we will not supply an air hose for any reason. Please have old fitting off the air hose before contestant arrives.
Contestant cannot talk to the judges, or other contestants about use of equipment, or how to accomplish any tasks during the competition. If a MIG welder fails (birds’ nests, etc.) during your welding portion, you must repair it; it is your responsibility to check tension, etc., before using the welder, parts will be located on the bench near the welding station. You may not move to another station until time is called and your area is clean. Once you move to another station you may not return to a previous station for any reason. You will be allotted five minutes to clean your area and five minutes to prepare for your next station. Twenty minutes will be allotted at the end of the competition for clean-up. Each contestant will have a number. It will be your responsibility to make sure that all your work is numbered before you leave a station.
Equipment/Tools/Materials Provided by HostSchool:
  1. MIG welding machines – Lincoln 140c or 180c welders w/.023 welding wire and argon/co2 shielding gas
  2. 7” grinding discs
  3. Tram Gauge
  4. 6” 3m hook-it DA paper
  5. 3M hook-it board file paper
  6. 16 gauge steel for welding (coupons purchased from I-CAR)
7.All materials necessary to complete projects
Equipment/Tools/Materials Provided by the Contestant:
1.Body file/sanding blocks and cheese grater
2.Flat and pick hammers
3.General purpose dolly
4.Clamps and vise grips
5.Air sanders and DAswith hook-it pads
6.Hand tools as desired
7.Grinder
8.Welding hood
9.Safety glasses, boots, welding gloves, etc.
10.Plastic spreaders, squeegees, filler tools, etc.
11.Other tools that the contestant prefers
All sandpaper is hook-it, it is the contestants responsibility to provide the proper pads
SCOPE OF CONTEST:
  1. Body Repair: Contestant will repair a damaged panel.
  2. Measurement: contestant will use a tram gauge
Contestant will prepare metal and perform a four (4”) inch continuous weld and four (4) plug welds
3. Written Test:ASE Format Test.
Metal Working and Filler Requirements:
Straighten a panel and fill same panel with plastic filler, contestant will do as much as possible in allotted time. However, they will not prime the panel.
Measurement
Contestant will be required to make basic measurements using a tram gauge
Welding
Welding Requirements: Contestant will lap weld two (2) pieces of steel together using a continuous weld at least four (4) inches long. Contestant will also weld four (4) plug welds using sixteen (16) gauge cold rolled steel purchased from I_CAR.
