Middle School Academic Team
Quick Recall and Written Assessment
2011-2012
General Information
Academic Team consists of three divisions of competition: Quick Recall, Written Assessment, and Future Problem Solving (FPS). Each division earns points towards an overall score in District, Regional, and State Governor’s Cup competitions. Mrs. Danielle Hicks coaches Quick Recall and Written Assessment, and Mr. Doug Spears coaches Future Problem Solving (FPS).
Quick Recall
Quick Recall is a “quiz bowl” event where students use a buzzer system to answer general knowledge questions. Questions are from every subject area and vary in difficulty. Quick Recall is worth 8% of the total value of Governor’s Cup competition.
We will be participating in both home and away Quick Recall scrimmages this fall. Information regarding dates, times, and places will be sent home when it is made available to coaches. These scrimmages usually take place on Monday nights.
Written Assessment
Written Assessment is exactly what the name suggests. Students earn a spot on each subject area team, and then take a written assessment exam in competition. Written Assessments are given in the following subjects: Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Arts & Humanities, Language Arts, and Composition. Each subject counts 15 points, with more points going to students that place higher. Written Assessment as a whole is worth 84% of the total value of Governor’s Cup competition. Study guides will be distributed to students on each Written Assessment team.
Future Problem Solving
Please contact Mr. Doug Spears regarding FPS. FPS is worth 8% of the total value of Governor’s Cup competition.

Shirts
We will be purchasing academic team shirts this year. In past years, we have chosen hoodies. This year, we are going to be purchasing long-sleeved t-shirts. The shirt will feature a design chosen by the team. Each team members’ name will also be featured on the back of the shirt. The cost of each shirt is $20. Parents may also purchase shirts. Money for shirts will be due by September 27, so that we may have them back in time for scrimmage matches this fall. Checks should be made to Clinton County Middle School. The order form is attached.
Attendance and Student Behavior
It is important that team members attend practice and demonstrate appropriate behaviors before, during, and after school. The following attendance/behavior policies have been put into place:
- You must attend practice to be an active part of this team. The more practices you attend, the more likely you are to play, no matter how good you are. When the scrimmagesbegin, the schedule may change some.Scrimmages are generally on Mondays. I will have an attendance sheet and keep track of all practices and scrimmages attended.
- If a member of the academic team has 3 unexcusedacademic team absences during the school year (this means practices and scrimmages), you will be removed from the team. An unexcused absence means you did not tell a coach PRIOR to a scrimmage or practice that you are going to be absent. Ballgames, ball practice, a death in the family, and illness are excused absences.Just not wanting to come to practice is not an excused absence.
- ANY ACADEMIC TEAM STUDENT WHO RECEIVES 1 ISS (TIME OUT) DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR WILL BE PUT ON PROBATION FOR 2 WEEKS. DURING THIS TIME, YOU MUST COME TO PRACTICES AND SCRIMMAGES. YOU WILL NOT GET TO COMPETE UNTIL THE PROBATION PERIOD IS OVER. IF YOU RECEIVE ANOTHER ISS (TIME OUT)ANYTIME DURING THE REST OF THE SCHOOL YEAR, YOU WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE TEAM.
- ANY ACADEMIC TEAM STUDENT THAT RECEIVES 1 OSS (SUSPENSION) WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE REMOVED FROM THE TEAM WITH NO POSSIBILITY OF PROBATION.
- Any academic team member who has to be disciplined atscrimmages or practices will be placed on one week probation. During this time period, you will have to come to all practices and scrimmages, but you will not compete. If no discipline referrals are needed during that time, probation will be lifted. If a team memberis disciplined a second time during any practice or scrimmage, that student will be removed from the team.
- Coaches can and will check your grades periodically throughout the year. If you are making a C or below in any class, you will be put on probation.
Academic members represent the “cream of the crop” and your behavior should reflect that!

I welcome any and all parental involvement! Students are most successful when their parents, teachers, and coaches work together. We always need snacks for practice days, pencils, and blank paper. If you would like to provide any of these materials, it would be greatly appreciated!
