Hike Information

Hike:Buttes Transect - Higher

Date:Saturday, February 7, 2008

Hike Description: Traverse the craggy central volcanic core of the Sutter Buttes. This is a very strenuous, "aggressive," and physically demanding hike that requires strength, stamina, and good, solid boots. Our hiking-route climbs steeply to a high natural ridge that will provide us with expansive panoramas of the Buttes and beyond. The lower hike will be transecting the opposite direction so there will be cars at the end of both hikes to return to the meet place. Total will be 7-8 miles with about 1900 feet of elevation gain and 2000 feet of elevation loss. Only register for this hike if you are in top physical shape.

Location Visited:SutterButtesPeaks

Difficulty Rating: 1 – Easy; 2 – Moderate; 3 – Challenging; 4 – Difficult; 5 – Strenuous.

Guide:Marty Steidlmayer and Brian Hausback

Meeting Place: SutterHigh School,2665 Acacia Avenue, Sutter, CA (see directions below). Note: No restrooms will be open at the high school; there is a portable at the trailhead.

Start Time: 7:30 a.m. All hikers need to be signed in by the scheduled start time. Our goal is that all hikes leave on time. To help preserve access into the Buttes, we will carpool from the meeting place to the hike site.Because this hike and the Lower Transect begin and end at opposite sides of the Buttes, we will be coordinating the vehicles so that your transportation will be waiting at the end of your hike and the same for the Lower Transect. (Some vehicles may remain at the high school.) This will require Lower Transect hikers driving some or all of your vehicles to their start, which is your finish. There may be twice as many on the lower hike, so it would help if you can bring a large vehicle that you are willing to let someone else drive.

Return Time: Between 4:30 & 5:00 p.m.

Group Size: Hikers are limited to 15.

What to Bring and Wear: You must wear sturdy shoeswith heavy tread or hiking boots. Sandals and tennis-type shoes are not allowed. Please wear clothing appropriate for weather conditions and wilderness hiking. A hiking stick can be helpful. You will need to bring water and food.

Special Notes:Trips are scheduled to proceed in all but the most severe weather conditions. Participants of allhikes should be prepared to expect uneven footing, stepping over rocks and boulders, crossing streams, and hill climbing. Poison oak is abundant and hard to spot without leaves at this time of year. Rattlesnakes, though common in the warmer weather, are usually reclusive and inactive during this time.No smoking is allowed on MMF hikes. Sorry, pets cannot be included.

Some hikes are acceptable for smaller children, but this one is not. All of our hikes are educational experiences. Please inform the hike coordinator when making your reservations if you are considering bringing children. We find that no hikes are appropriate for toddlers. We suggest that hikes rated 3 or 4 may be suitable for children 12 or older, but it depends on the child and the hike.

Payment Information: Your reservation will not be complete until payment and the form included in this packet is received.

Policies:

Children: Every minor child must be accompanied by and in the control of their responsible adult at all times.

Hiker Cancellation Policy: Full refund given when you cancel at least 4 days prior to the hike. A 48-hour notice is required for a refund of half of your fee. No refund can be given for cancellations of less than 48 hours or for no-shows.

MMF Cancellation Policy: Hikes will take place in rain or shine, but we hope for shine. Hikes are not conducted when wind advisories are high. MMF will notify hikers as timely as possible if a hike is cancelled. Full refunds will be given if a hike is cancelled by MMF.
