Job Summary
Midday supervisors are required to help staff at the School supervise pupils during their lunch breaks. They are to sustain the welfare and safety of pupils during the break period, as directed by the Principal. You are expected to keep matters concerning staff and children confidential. You will help maintain a calm and respectful atmosphere throughout the School.
The main areas of work responsibility will be the dining areas and the playground or areas of the school used during the lunch break. A good standard of behaviour is needed and it is important that this should be maintained throughout the lunch period which should be a pleasant experience for all concerned.
The midday supervisor must act as a responsible caring adult with the health, safety, welfare of the children always in mind. They must show conduct which commands respect and must see that the children behave at all times sensibly and quietly. The Midday Supervisor must be aware of how to get access to the first aid equipment and to the telephone, and of the fire evacuation procedures in the event of it not being possible to contact the Principal.
Main Duties and Key Responsibilities
- Communicate with the children with respect and sensitivity, encouraging positive behaviour at all times
- Never use threatening behaviour or language to a pupil. Do not administer any forms of punishment
- If you become concerned about any obvious changes in a pupil’s behaviour, report it to the Principal
- Ensure you have the correct number of children delegated to your care, reporting any discrepancy to the Principal
- Give encouragement to the children to eat their meal, but never force a child to clear their plate
- Once lunch has been eaten engage with the children in activities which promote healthy and active lifestyles
- Regularly rotate activities on offer to the children
- For safety and wellbeing of the pupils, keep all areas of the school playground under observation, ensuring gates are closed, must be vigilant at all times
- Do not allow any pupil to leave the school premises during the lunch time period unless previously advised to do so by a member of staff. Any adult wishing to collect a pupil during lunch time must be referred to the Principal
- Provide comfort and immediate care in case of minor accidents, and report serious incidents to the Principal
- Deal with minor incidents of unacceptable behaviour, allowing each child to give their side of the argument
- Refer major incidents of unacceptable behaviour to the Principal
- For your own health and safety please wear clothes appropriate for the job and suitable for playing with the children outside e.g. flat shoes with non-slip soles and warm clothes.
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Maintain high standards of professional conduct and personal appearance and to work as a positive team player, demonstrating mutual respect and integrity for others whilst maintaining open and effective communication at all levels within the business.
