Microsoft Word Terminology

  1. Alignment - refers to the position of lines in a paragraph in relation to the documents left and right margins
  1. Bullets - special characters or symbols that are used to set off a paragraph.
  1. Clip Art - pre-designed images that can be placed within a document.
  1. Document - another name for a file created using Microsoft Word.
  1. Font - a style of typeface, such as: Times New Roman, Arial Black, Arial, and Freestyle Script. A font is a set of all the characters available in one typeface and size, including uppercase and lowercase letters, punctuation, and numerals.
  1. Format Painter - enables you to copy the formatting of one word or paragraph and apply it to another word or paragraph.
  1. Margin - The amount of blank space, usually measured in inches or characters, above and below and to the right and left of the main body of a document.
  1. Paragraph - A paragraph is any amount of text separated by a hard return. Microsoft Word sees anything from a single word to an entire page of text as a paragraph.
  1. Print Preview - Print Preview lets you see how your document will look on the page before it is printed.
  1. Wrapping - Text automatically wraps to the next line when typing in Microsoft Word. The only time you need to hit the enter key is when you want to start a new paragraph.

Microsoft Excel Terminology

  1. Active Cell -The active cell contains the cell pointer, a dark outline around the cell.
  1. Blank Workbook -The excel default workbook contains three worksheet tabs or sheets.
  1. Cell Reference- The location of a cell in a worksheet identified by its column letter and row number. This is alsoknown as the cell’s address.
  1. Cell- A cell is the intersection of a column and a row on a worksheet. You enter data into cells to createa worksheet.
  1. Formula Bar- As you enter data into a cell, it simultaneously appears in the Formula bar, which is located abovethe worksheet frame.
  1. Formula- An instruction Excel uses to calculate a number like =J1 * J2.
  1. Function- A predefined formula that depends on specific values to perform a specific calculation.
  1. Print Area- The specified range of cells to be printed.
  1. Range- A block of cells in an Excel worksheet.
  1. Sheet Tabs- Tabs that appear at the bottom of the workbook window, that display the name of each worksheet.
  1. Template - A workbook with certain labels, formulas, and formatting preset, saving you time in creatingcommonly used forms, such as invoices or purchase orders.
  1. Workbook- An Excel file with one or more worksheets.
  1. Worksheet- The work area for entering and calculating data made up of columns and rows separated bygridlines (light gray lines). Also called a spreadsheet.

Microsoft PowerPoint Terminology

  1. Slide- An individual screen in a slide show.
  1. Object- Any element that appears on a PowerPoint slide such as clip art, text, drawings, charts, sounds, and video clips. You can refer to a clip art object, a text object, a title object, a drawing object, etc.
  1. Slide Show- A series of slides displayed in sequence. A slide show can be controlled manually or automatically.
  1. Transition- A special effect used to introduce a slide during a slide show. For example, you can fade in from black, or dissolve from one slide to another.
  1. Animation- Special visual and sound effects applied to text or content. For example, each line on the slide can swivel as it displays on the screen or an object can zoom in from the top of the screen to the bottom.
  1. Design Template- Provides consistency in design and color throughout the entire presentation.
  1. Title- Slide First slide in a new presentation.
