Job Title: Professional Development Officer – 6 Month FTC

The Microbiology Society is a membership charity for scientists interested in microbes, their effects and their practical uses. It is one of the largest microbiology societies in Europe with a worldwide membership based in universities, industry, hospitals, research institutes and schools. Through the professional development programme, the Society supports career and professional development of its members.

Purpose

Reporting to the Professional Development Manager, the Professional Development Officer will support the delivery of the Society’s professional development programme and grants schemes.

Duties

Working across the Professional Development team, the Professional Development Officer will contribute to the deliveryof the Society’s professional development programme from conception through to completion. Specific duties to be determined by the Professional Development Manager; key work areas include (but will not necessarily be limited to):

  • Supporting the organisation and delivery of professional development sessions at the Annual Conference, Focused Meetings and other Society events in collaboration with the rest of the Professional Development team and the Conferences team.
  • Supporting the Early Career Microbiologists’ Forum and Executive Committee with Forum activities.
  • Supporting the delivery of the Prize Lectures process from nomination to selection and presentation, including the Young Microbiologist of the Year competition.
  • Contributing to specific programme development projects via research and consultation with the membership.
  • Supporting internal Equality, Diversity and Inclusion processes including the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Ambassadors, annual data collation and report to Council, and the implementation of recommendations from the annual report, identifying collaborative opportunities with other organisations where appropriate.
  • Contributing to Microbiology Today and the Society’s digital platforms to promote professional development opportunities. Implementing appropriate evaluation methods for all professional development activities and contributing to evaluation reports to determine how future activities could be improved.
  • Ensuring that all activities are appropriately branded and deliver optimum outcomes in terms of the Society’s strategic aims.
  • Maintaining relationships with members, delegates and other key stakeholders of the Society.
  • Monitoring expenditure within the Members’ Programmes budget in collaboration with the Professional Development Manager.
  • Other duties as determined by the Professional Development Manager from time to time.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent
  • Minimum of two years’ experience working in professional development or events management.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and oral.
  • Strong organisational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent administration skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the Society’s professional development programme.

Desirable

  • Understanding of higher education and the scientific research environment.
  • Interest in providing professional development and/or career development.
  • Interest in microbiology or related subject.
