Micro-Teach Activity - Year-1

Revised July 2016

Learning-centered is a performance, outcome, and evidence-driven philosophy that asks what students will learn and how one can determine whether the desired learning has taken place” (O’Banion, 1997).

“Active learning engages students in the process of learning through activities and/or discussion in class, as opposed to passively listening to an expert. It emphasizes higher-order thinking and often involves group work” (Bhatia, 2014).

Purpose: The purpose of the Micro-Teach is to explore Learning-Centered Teaching Practice in a safe and supportive environment. You will receive feedback from your colleagues that you can use to improve your practice.

Preparation Before Micro-Teach Activity
Step 1: Attend LCTS2224 Interactive Lecture and LCTS2111 Cooperative Learning in the College Classroom with Dr. Susan Ledlow.
Step 2: Choose two of the following Learning-centered Teaching Practicecourse electives:
  • LCTS2214 - Problem-based Learning (2 PD)
  • LCTS 2222 - Case-based Teaching (2 PD)
  • LCTS 2223 - Asking the Right Questions (2 PD)
  • LCTS 2226 - Write to Learn (2 PD)
  • LCTS3160 - 101 Strategies for Demonstrating the Essential Competencies (10 PD)
  • INDV 7311 - Creating a Safe Space for Dialogue (10 PD)
Step 3: Take notes about each of the above workshops you attended. Write about which specific active learning techniques you have not previously utilized but would like to employ with your students. These notes will help you as you prepare for the Micro-Teach andfor the Micro-Teach/Learning-centered Teaching reflection in your AMP.
Step 4: Design an 8-10 minute Micro-Teach that
  1. uses an learning-centered teaching techniquethat you have never tried
  2. adapts or adopts one of the activities from the workshops
  3. engages your colleagues in active learning (as if they were your students)
Tips:
  • Don’t try to cover a full lesson in 8-10 minutes.
  • If needed, you may take one minute to contextualize the activity.
  • The students (colleagues) should be actively learning for at least 7-9 minutes.
Step 5: Complete Micro-Teach lesson plan and e-mail a copy to your TLA facilitator prior to the Micro-Teach.
Step 6: Present Micro-Teach lesson to TLA colleagues and facilitators.
Step 7:Complete a written reflection about your learning-centered teaching and Micro-Teach experience on the Analysis of My Practice (AMP) form.
