Introduction……

The All Wales Improvement Network for services for older people with mental health problems and with dementia was established in 2004 with the following aims:- .

Aims……

  • To help ensure that mental health remains a national priority and within this, profile the needs of (i) older people with mental health problems and (ii) younger people with dementia.
  • To help primary health care teams to be better equipped to diagnose and manage dementia.
  • To help develop and disseminate good practice in service provision.
  • To promote and enable training for care staff, especially in care homes including general care homes.
  • To advise commissioners and the Assembly.

Focus……

This network meeting provides a key focus on the priority for the development of services for older people with mental health problems, in addition to a focus on a range of good practice examples from across Wales and England to explore the development and change management agenda for professionals, managers, commissioners, service users and carers.

Who is it for?

The event is for managers, team leaders and practitioners in mental health teams and generic older peoples’ teams in statutory, voluntary and independent sectors and will be of interest to those involved in the development, delivery and commissioning of mental health services in primary health care, secondary care, social care, the voluntary sector, community health and public health, including those who have experience of using mental health services and carers. Note that the focus of the Network (AWIN) is on services for both older people with functional mental illness and also people with dementia of all ages.
