Metro PTSO Communications Committee FAQ 4.2

Transition to College

Does Metro provide college guidance for students and, if so, what form does that guidance take?

Yes. Students begin preparing for college as early as middle school. This is done through college and career exploration and the Metro Habits. Upon entering high school students will attend a college visit day to learn about the expectations and program offerings of that particular university. October is college month in which each Advisory selects a college of their choice and does in-depth research on all that the college has to offer. Throughout the year Lunch and Learns are scheduled with universities and colleges thatvisit Metro and share information about their schools. Every Senior is enrolled in Senior Communications, which is a course specific to the needs of our Seniors. They meet weekly and work through college selections, the common app, financial aid and meeting the requirements and deadlines of the school. Our OSU Advisor works very closely with our guidance counselor to make students aware of the multitude of college options and helps students narrow down selections to colleges/universities that best fit them.

Does Metro offer classes or tutoring for standardized test preparation?

Sometimes. This is dependent on the needs of the student cohort. Last year we offered a test prep speed course for ACT. During other years we have helped students individually.

What percentage of Metro high school students successfully transition to take classes at Ohio State?

Historically between 80%-85%.

What colleges have Metro students applied to in the past and where have they been accepted?

See annual report on website.

Student Internships

What are student internships and how does the internship process work?

The internship is an opportunity to work for 60 hours in a selected field of study. Students are exposed to the company and asked to be contributing members during their internship experience.

Once a location is selected, students will schedule time at the site of the internship. Each student isscheduled for internship during one period of the school day and may complete hours at that time. However, based on specific internship needs, transportation and availability of the mentor, scheduled hours for completion will vary between school hours and afterschool hours. The internship teacher will meet with internship mentors to make sure that the requirements are being satisfied.

Where have internships taken place? How do students get to their internship locations? How does a student get his or her internship project approved?

The list is long. We have students intern throughout Columbus –with the Mayor, Battelle, OSU, corporate offices downtown and local businesses. We first ask students to seek out an internship location (something of interest to them). We then see if that location will be a good fit (what type of work will the student be doing, what are the hours that are available, is the mentor a good fit, etc.). The internship coordinator will then either give approval for that location and meet with the mentor to talk about next steps or provide the student with some other placement opportunities.

Parent Volunteering and Contributing

I’m a parent or Metro supporter with a background in science/engineering/business, and I am willing to help Metro by being a guest lecturer, talking with students about my work, making my work space or lab available for a tour, offering an internship opportunity, or helping with a design challenge. How can I best offer that assistance?

Connect with Sharon Graham () or Pam Hayes (). Both of these individuals place students for internship or can connect your opportunity with the appropriate teacher.

I’m a parent or Metro supporter interested in supporting the school financially. Can I make a tax-deductible donation, and if so, how?

Most definitely! You may send your donation directly to the school or to CathrynGeppert. An acknowledgement letter will be returned to you.

I’m a parent or Metro supporter and I have time available after-school on a regular basis to lead or assist with a club. Who should I contact to offer that assistance?
