Methods of Planting Ornamental Plants, 21.00- P:1

When planting a landscape there are a lot of things that are used in determining what plants to use, where to plant them and how to maintain them. The one thing that all ornamental plants being used in a landscape have in common, is that they need to be PLANTED. So no matter what plant you order ranging from bulbs to large deciduous trees, each plant is going to need its own specialized method of planting.

There are three ways ornamental plants come from a nursery

  1. ______also called B&B
  2. ______, this is the most common
  3. ______

Each plant needs to be planted differently according to the container it came in. The one thing that all these plants have in common are the tools you are going to need to plant the ornamental plant in your landscape. Some common tools used in planting are:

  1. ______used for planting bulbs
  2. ______Sturdy garden tool that can be pushed in with the foot
  3. ______small hand tool used for scooping and spreading
  4. ______large tool that can be pushed with the foot and is used for spreading and scooping
  5. ______an earthmoving machine with a hydraulic scoop in the front used for lifting and loading earth
  6. ______A machine having a rotating helical shaft for boring into the earth.

After choosing which tool to use to make a hole for your ornamentals you must know how big to make the hole. The size of the hole you dig will be determined by the size of the root ball on your plant.

  1. The size of your hole should be ______as wide as the root ball
  2. The depth of your hole should be just about the______depth as your root ball
  3. If you have a compact soil then you need to loosen the soil in the hole and/or add amendment such as ______to the hole.

How each plant is planted is determined by what type of container it came in. The three type of containers are:

  1. ______
  2. ______
  3. ______

Balled and Burlapped plants need to be planted in holes that have flat bottomed, straight sides and are deeper and wider than the root ball. After the hole is dug the plant’s crown needs to be level or slightly ______so that the plant is at the same level with the ground that it was at the nursery. After you have the plant in the hole the next step is to take off all of the ______from the plant (or you can leave it on). Next backfill the hole with the remaining soil and make a ______around the plant to aid in catching water for the new plant. Now it is time to ______and water the plant.

Containerized Plantsare going use the same method of planting as a balled and burlapped plant. The only difference is you have to ______the plant from the ______. Once this is done you need to help unwind the roots. You can make cut in the root ball every ______.

Bare root plants have to have a ______or dome in the bottom of the hole to spread roots and direct roots to grow downward.
