CRAFT WORK!

This St. Patrick’s Weekend, the annual Irish Craft Beer & Food Market returns to Dublin city, and will showcase some of the tastiest home-brewed offerings our little nation has to offer. In celebration of both this exciting event and the thriving craft beer industry that underpins it, we’ve taken a closer look at some of the Irish entrepreneurs who’ve persevered with their dream of setting up an independent craft brewery, and now have their produce on sale in pubs, bars and off-licenses both around the country and beyond! Given the vibrant craft pub scene in Dublin right now, we also recommended a bar in which to enjoy a pint of your new favourite beverage. Sláinte!

CARLOW BREWING COMPANY

Home of the popular O’Hara’s range, Carlow Brewing Company is a family-run business established by Séamus O’Hara back in 1996. Based in a charming 19th century goods store within Carlow town’s railway station grounds, the CBC crew produce an array of tasty beverages; we recommend the zesty, bitter O’Hara’s Pale Ale, the caramel and malt flavourings of O’Hara’s Double IPA, the delicious Curim wheat beer and the award-winning O’Hara’s Irish Stout.

TROUBLE BREWING

Set up just five years ago by three beer-loving friends - Stephen Clinch, Stephen O’Connor and Thomas Prior - Trouble Brewing produces a trio of delicious beers; the smooth and refreshing Deception Golden Ale, a smoky Dark Arts Porter (delicious) and the strong, full-bodied Sabotage India Pale Ale. Things have been going so well in fact for the boys, that the outgrew their original premises in Allenwood in Kildare, moving instead to nearby Kill.

EIGHT DEGREES BREWING

@8DegreesBrewing

Having relocated to Ireland from the lands down under, Ozzie Cam Wallace and Kiwi Scott Baigent were initially home brewers, before honing their skills at the Versuchs und Lehranstalt fur Braurei (aka fancy brewers’ college VLB!) in Berlin. Since then, the pair purchased a brewhouse from the aforementioned Carlow Brewing Company, and now make delicious beer in the scenic surroundings of Mitchelstown, Co. Cork. From their wide array, we recommend the flavoursome, malty Howling Gale Ale and the dark, chocolatey Knockmealdown Porter.

Sample it in: Against The Grain, Wexford Street, D2

GALWAY HOOKER

Established in 2006 by cousins Ronan Brennan and Aidan Murphy (who holds a Master’s Degree in Distilling and Brewing, might we add!) Galway Hooker hold the honour of producing the first permanent pale ale in Ireland. What’s more, this tasty ale, brimming with flavours of hops and toasted barley, has twice been named ‘Ireland’s Best Beer’. Cheers!
