Cinemas with character
There is a reason that the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival attracts filmmakers and aficionados from across the globe. It’s a film festival with a soul, in no small part due to the diverse selection of cinemas scattered across the city. Each one with its own unique character and vibe. Even after the icons of the screen have jetted off to the next festival, these amazing venues are just waiting to be explored.
IFI
This is a place for true film lovers. Similar to Tarantino’s work, it is strewn with movie references, every wall is packed with film memorabilia and production stills. This is more than a cinema - it’s a haven, where you’ll often see famous faces speckled among the crowd and where long after the movie lets out you’ll find enthralled film fans digesting what they just saw over a drink in the cinema’s bustling bar and cafe.
The Savoy
Much like Katherine Hepburn herself, The Savoy epitomises the striking looks
of a bygone era of cinema. A time of glitz and glamour and effortless cool, when the colour was in the story and not always on the screen. When real men wore hats and women spoke very, very fast. But don’t be fooled - behind the art-deco facade and crushed velvet curtains you’ll find all the conveniences of a modern cinema, complete with 3D screens and big drinks.
Cineworld
Some people like their movies bigger than life. Who needs bittersweet love
stories when you can watch a helicopter being blown-up? Or a surprising
plot twist when you can see one man take out a entire army with a tree trunk?
If you like your action supersized, with a side-serving of nachos and cheese then
the IMAX in Cineworld is the place that’ll keep you saying: “I’ll be Back!”.
The Lighthouse
Daniel Day-Lewis is a chameleon of the modern screen. He knits himself into the very fabric of each character that he plays, evoking very different emotions. Depending on the role you never know which Day-Lewis you’ll meet, but he’s always certain to entertain. The same can be said of The Lighthouse, it may be an emporium for the avant-garde, showcasing the world’s best independent films, but at the same time it never takes itself too seriously. With it’s varied programme of films from the melancholy to the downright hilarious, you never know quite what to expect.
