Call for Poster Presentations – Gallery of Nursing Excellence
The Sanford Health Nursing Symposium Committee invites you to showcase Nursing Excellence throughthe exhibition of a poster presentation at the 2018Nursing Symposium. The purpose of the poster presentation session is to enhance the learning experience of conference attendees through the sharing of new knowledge gained through nursing research, the integration of evidence into practice, practice improvements and innovations to improve outcomes.
The deadline for submission of a poster presentation is Monday, March 19, 2018. If interested, please submit the attached Submission Form and your abstract electronically as directed on the form. See page 3 of this document for further information on the abstract criteria.
If your abstract meets the criteria and is accepted, your poster is to be displayed throughout the conference. You (or a designee) will need to be in attendance during the scheduled poster presentation times to discuss the poster with conference participants. This will include two sessions each day, both Thursday and Friday.
To assist with planning, please keep in mind:
- Posters accepted for presentation are to be set up by 8:30 am on Thursday, April 26th, to be eligible for judging.(The room will open at 7:00am to allow you time for setup).
- All posters and related supplies/equipment will need to be removed by the presenters no later than12:30 pm on Friday, April27th.
Poster abstracts that are selected will be notified in writing no later thanFriday, April 6th, 2018.
Poster participants will be required to complete the Bio Disclosureform prior to the conference. In addition, all poster presenters will have their abstracts published in the course materials and posted on the Nursing at Sanford SharePoint site. Awards will be presented for outstanding quality in each category.

Nursing Research – A systematic investigation, including research development, testing and evaluation, designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services).Evidence Based Practice – The conscientious use/integration of the best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient preferences in nursing practice (adapted from Sackett, Straus, Richardson, Rosenberg & Haynes, 2000).
Quality Improvement – Systematic, data-guided activities designed to bring about immediate improvement in healthcare delivery in particular settings (Lynn et al., 2007).
Innovation – An improvement in practice due to nurse involvement in technology and information system decision-making, or due to nurses’ participation in architecture and space design. This improvement is planned and implemented to improve health outcomes, administrative efficiency, cost effectiveness or the user’s experience (ANCC Magnet® Resource Toolkit, 2010).

Abstract Judging Criteria
Nursing symposium judging criteria for abstract acceptance/non-acceptance is as follows:Scientific Merit:
The topic is pertinent to the development of nursing knowledge.
Practicality:
The abstract enhances the foundation for clinical decision-making or stimulates thinking about nursing practice applications.
Organization:
Overall, the abstract is readable and accurately presented with a valid conclusion.
Presentation:
The presentation demonstrates and insightful application or a creative and original solution to a clinical practice issue or problem. Style demonstrates professionalism and grammatically correct.
Technical Quality:
The abstract must include complete information or outcomes and have scientific backing.
Nursing Research-Based Abstracts / Evidence Based Practice, Quality Improvement or Innovation Abstracts
Background: Description of the problem. / Background and Issues: A short summary of the issue(s), problem, or specific clinical challenges or controversy, with relevant background and contextual information.
Purpose: Research questions or hypothesis. / Purpose: Clear statement of the project goal is stated.
Methods: Study design, including a description of participants, procedures, measures, and appropriate statistical analyses. / Methods: Description of the project or program, clinical intervention(s), analysis plan or criteria used to guide analysis.
Results: Specific results in summary form. / Results: Lessons learned—a brief description of the findings or lessons learned as a result of the project.
Conclusions/Implications for Practice: Major findings are presented with interpretation and implications for nursing practice. / Conclusions/Implications for Practice: A brief description of recommended position or approach, or specific recommendations related to the original problem or questions identified.
