Your mission (which you must choose to accept) is create with your cooperative group members the most interesting, delicious, scrumptious, mouth-watering, tantalizing, colorful, tasteful restaurant menu you can imagine!

1. / Design a colorful interesting cover using Microsoft Word. You may include clip art, pictures, or personal artwork (scan). You can also use the Drawing Toolbar in Word to add visual elements to your menu. Pages can be either landscape or portrait.
2. / Include a game or puzzle for the back cover of your menu to entertain children.
3. / Write an interesting story detailing how your restaurant began. You may include photos/drawings of the original owners.
4. / Include at least 20 adjectives that appeal to your sense of taste to describe menu items. Use at least 10 additional adjectives for the remainder of the menu.
5. / Include the following items:

Description:

Menu should be creative, appealing, and informative:

Restaurant may be realistic or fictitious.Be creative! Originality is a definite plus

Menu should have a consistent theme:

Theme should be followed throughout the menu. Theme may be just about anything

Possibilities: ethnic, vegan, sports, music, hobbies, books, galactic

Theme does not have to be serious

Possibilities: monsters, cartoons, gaming, computing

Items (products) listed on the menu are only limited by your imagination:

Menu items do not have to be serious or real

Possibilities: humorous, sarcastic, satirical, political

Menu items do not have to be for human consumption

Possibilities: animals, cars, computers, extraterrestrials

Menu must be at least (but is not limited to) three pages long.

First page (cover) must display the restaurant’s name, location(s) and its phone number(s).

Menu pages may be any reasonable dimensions, shape, and orientation:

Page dimensions do not have to be 8½ by 11 inches

Pages may be portrait, landscape or other reasonable orientation

Pages do not have to be rectangular

Possibilities: circular, diamond, animal, or car shaped

Menu must contain at least ten menu items with informative descriptions and prices.

Menu items may be traditional, humorous, scary, etc.

Alcoholic drinks may be served.

Appetizers, desserts, and children’s items are nice additions.

A price should be listed for every item on your menu.

A menu item’s price must be on the same page as its description.

Prices may be in dollars and cents, or some other consistent currency.

Menu must contain some graphics and/or clipart

Graphics should be relevant to (and not detract from the) menu and make it more appealing.

You may use or modify existing graphics, or create your own

Text must tightly wrap around at least one graphic object

Graphics related to a menu item should be aligned near its text description

Menu must be in color.

Work on this menu may be done at home and/or in school.

Plan to spend at least fifteen hours creating your menu

This menu must be entirely your own work

Use as many Microsoft Word capabilities as is practical to demonstrate your proficiency

Microsoft Word must be used to create (and save) the menu.

WordArt, or other drawing capability of Word must be demonstrated

Tabs, horizontal and vertical alignments features of Word must be demonstrated

Try using different font typefaces, sizes, styles, and colors.

Use bullets, tabs, and tab leaders to improve the menu's appearance.

Consider the use of page or paragraph borders,

Menu may contain a few ideas, items, and/or graphics from existing sources:

Most of the menu must be your own creation.

Pictures and clipart copied from the Internet may be used

Do not blindly copy text or graphics.

A reference must be cited for any copyrighted or similar material that is used

This reference must not have to be part of the menu.

Use a separate page or on the reverse side of your menu’s last page.

When in doubt, cite the source.

Plagiarism will be dealt with severely.

1. / Menu Collection (Amazon.com): Amazon has collected sample menus from many major U.S. cities and from some of America's most popular eateries. Search through them by location, cuisine, or most popular.
2. / Rare Menu Collection (Cornell University - School of Hotel Management): A wonderful look at menus from as far back as 1951.
3. / NY Public Library- Menu Collection: The New York Public Library owns one of the largest historical collections of menus in the world, held in the Rare Books Division. Begun by a donation from Miss Frank E. Buttolph and continued until her death in 1924, the collection has been augmented by other gifts over the years. The Buttolph Collection is strongest for the period between 1890 and 1910.

4. / Food Timeline - Historic Food Pricing: This site helps examine the cost of menu items in the past. It also includes information about how to calculate inflation to determine the values in current day. This site is likely to be more appropriate for using as a high school resource; where students incorporate math skills into the project. It is something teachers could use to present information at any level. The page does offer information about how to search for historical menu and food pricing information and is a resource that could inspire other student projects.
5. / Popular Present Day Online Menus: The following sites are large restaurant chains. Students can use these to get a sense about common food item cost with a wide variety of cuisines.
