MEMORIAL DAY FLAG PLACEMENT PROGRAM

Please read instructions to your group carefullybefore you begin.

If you have any questions, please ask before you set out into the park.

  1. Find YOUR garden and locate the highlighted section of YOUR garden.
  1. Locate marker pins in the ground (see diagram). If you stand on the marker pin, in front of you from left to right is A B C D, and directly behind you is E F G H.

3. Find your marker pin number and gravesite letter on the master list. Use the probe to make a hole just above the headstone. Place the flag in the hole.If there is not a headstone and the space is listed, do your best to ‘eyeball’ where the flag should go. There is a Veteran buried there; unfortunately, not all Veterans have headstones.

4. Please DO NOT allow children to use or play with the probes. If you have trouble with the probe or if it hits a rock, try moving over a few inches.*Place flag, observe a moment of silence, and salute. *

  1. Please take your time and be as accurate as possible. You will have enough flags for you area. They are painstakingly counted beforehand. If you have any flags left over, it could mean that you have missed a Veteran. We would not want anyone overlooked. Please go back and double-check your map and garden section for errors.
  1. If you find a grave that isnot on your list, but is obviously a Veteran, please place a flag and list the garden, marker number, and letter of the location on the sheet provided. If you run out of flags, please send someone to the check-in area for more flags. Do not skip any graves.
  1. It is very important that ALL graves of Veterans are recognized with a flag. Many friends and relatives will be visiting on Memorial Day.
  1. When finished, return the probes, pencilsand maps to the check-in area where you started. They will be used as a reference for next year.

9.Relax and enjoy the lunch the Elks Lodge has generously provided. Pat yourself and your group on the back, you’ve just helped complete an honorable task!

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for volunteering and being part of making this Memorial Day a Tribute to Veterans. See you again next year!
