The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) is currently accepting applications for the 2016–17 Washington State Title I, Part A Distinguished Schools Award.

Four Title I, Part A schools will be recipients of this award. Two schools will be selected for national recognition and two schools will be selected for state recognition. Each submission must identify the content area ELA (English language arts) and/or mathematics, and one or more of the following categories to emphasize:

Category 1:Exceptional student performance for two or more consecutive years.

Category 2:Significant progress in closing the achievement gap between student groups.

Category 3:Excellence in serving special populations of students.

The two schools receiving the National Title I, Part A Distinguished Schools Award will receive recognition and be honored at the 2017 National Title I Conference in Long Beach, California, February 22–25, 2017. These schools will also receive state-level recognition and $10 thousand.

The two schools selected for the State Title I, Part A Distinguished Schools Awardwill also be invited to attend the 2017 National Title I Conference in Long Beach, California in February 2017, and receive state-level recognition and $5 thousand.

School Eligibility

Eligibility for award will be based on the Smarter Balanced Assessment data for school years ending in 2015 and 2016, based upon student growth (SGP) and state average scores.

Applying schools must be Title I, Part A served (i.e., have a poverty rate of 35 percent or higher,or a poverty rate above the district poverty average for the 2016–17 school year). Schools that have received the National Title I, Part A Distinguished Schools Award must wait two years before applying again. However, schools that have received the State Title I, Part A Distinguished Schools Award within the two previous years are eligible to apply for the National Title I, Part A Distinguished Schools Award only.

Selection Considerations

The following criteria will be considered when evaluating applications:

  • Priority will be given to schools with a 35 percent or higher poverty rate and with a diverse student population.
  • Learning and teaching based on the approved state standards.
  • Use of research-based instructional strategies.
  • Opportunities provided for all students to achieve.
  • Coordination of Title I, Part A program with other programs.
  • Implementation of sustained research-based professional development.
  • Established partnerships with parents, families, and the community.
  • Any school or district which did not meet the 95 percent participation rate will not be eligible.

Application Contents

Attachment A contains the 2016–17 Title I, Part A Distinguished Schools Award Program Application, which must be completed for each school being nominated.

In addition, as part of the selection process, those schools nominated for this award are subject to a site visit by the Title I, Part A Distinguished Schools Award Selection Committee.

Application Deadlines

Applications are due no later than October 10. Selection of the two National Distinguished Schools and two State Distinguished Schools will take place by October
