Sailing Venue

The group is currently sailing in the Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club basin, inside the public jetty to the south. While this restricts us in terms of courses appropriate to wind direction, it is a relatively sheltered area which has proved beneficial to beginning radio sailors

Goolwa Radio Control Yachting Group

About our group:

The Goolwa Radio Control Yachting Group meets every Monday and Friday from 3:00 pm. to 5:00 pm at the Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club basin, weather permitting. The group is based on sailing a ‘Phantom’ yacht which is essentially unmodified so far as the sails, mast and appendages are concerned. These yachts are available for a very reasonable amount via the Internet from ‘Hobby King’

With their tall rigs, blue foresail and the attractive surrounds at Goolwa, the Phantoms make a striking scene.

To support the members and to let others know about the group, a web site has been established to enable members of our group to make the most of this yacht. Many ideas about simple modifications to make the sailing experience more enjoyable while not essentially altering the yacht have been included as well as links to the South Australian and Australian radio yachting clubs and associations.

Phantom yachts are one metre in length with a sail area of about 0.4 square metres and a ballast of up to 1800g. They excel in the lighter weather but need to be nursed along as the wind increases above 12 or so knots. The group may consider allowing a reduced sail area rig in the future to cope with the stronger winds.

The group is not restricted to Phantoms and we encourage all radio yachts to join us. We see One Metres, Marbleheads, Ten Raters, TS 16, Ocean Racers, Monsoons, etc.
