MembersAppointed to Shetland NHS Board

The Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport today announced the appointments of Jane Haswell, Lisa Ward, Natasha Cornick and Shona Manson as Members of the Shetland NHS Board.

MEMBERS

Jane Haswellworked in Lothian & North Clwyd Health Boards before moving to take up a post as Community Podiatrist with Shetland Health Board in 1989. She then moved to social care service gaining experience as Unit Manager of a rural care centre. Taking part in an early form of integration developing partnerships across the health and social service provision within rural Shetland. Having a keen interest in training and professional development Mrs Haswell moved to lecturing for the Open University then taking up post at Shetland College Health & Care Department in 2004. She has experience across Health, Social Care and education within Shetland with special interests in long term conditions and learning difficulties. This breadth of experience will bring a professional and Carers perspective to the role within the Board. She has experience of accessing rural Shetland primary care as well as secondary care within Shetland and Grampian Health Board.

Lisa Wardis a local business owner who grew up in Shetland and currently lives in Burra. Ms Ward has over a decade of experience working in communications, from journalism through to PR and marketing. She holds a 1st Class BA Hons in English from the University of Strathclyde where she was awarded the Meston Prize for Outstanding Academic Achievement. In her free time, she writes and performs music and has recently released an album with her band.

Natasha Cornickhas lived in Shetland since she was a young child. In terms of her professional life she has worked for over 15 years in the legal sector predominantly in the area of accounts and executries. She also has experience of voluntary work having undertaken 8 years of voluntary children’s work and was also appointed as Treasurer to the Shetland Aid Trust for a period of 2 years. Mrs Cornick is married with two small children, one of whom has a serious congenital heart defect. She therefore has direct experience of a number of NHS facilities and has an appreciation of the impact that serious and/or long-term illness can have on family life.

Shona Mansonwas a founding member of local mental health charity Mind Your Head and Chairperson for almost 11 years as it grew and developed in Shetland. For the past 10 years she has been Project Manager for Family Mediation Shetland, following its re-launch in 2007, and has grown and developed the service to support families in Shetland experiencing conflict following separation and divorce and other challenging life transitions. With a qualification in social work, honours degree in Health and Social care Miss Manson has used this learning to expand into more specific work with families and have become a family mediator / supervisor and has also undertaken training in systemic family therapy. The particular skills she hopes to bring to the NHS and IJB board include the ability to communicate effectively on all levels, to listen to different perspectives and consider options while maintaining a strategic overview. She thinks that how we communicate with the Shetland Community about how decisions ‘are made, particularly those that may be controversial, is key. She strongly believes in the importance of people being listened to and their views and opinions utilised for service improvement and that even at a strategic level we still need to remain people focussed and truly understand the impact that services, or lack of, has on people in Shetland. Her experience on various committees and how to process and utilise information effectively will be crucial for this role.

APPOINTMENTS

The appointmentsof Lisa Ward, Natasha Cornick and Shona Manson will be for four years and will run from 10 July 2017 to 9 July 2021. The appointment of Jane Haswell will be for four years and will run from 1 January 2018 to 31 December 2021.

Theappointments are regulated by the Commissioner for Ethical Standards in Public Life in Scotland.

REMUNERATION

The appointments arepart-time and attracts a remuneration of £7,479 for a time commitment of one day per week.

OTHER MINISTERIAL APPOINTMENTS

Jane Haswell, Lisa Ward, Natasha Cornick and Shona Manson do not hold any other ministerial public appointments.

POLITICAL ACTIVITY

All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity within the last five years (if there is any to be declared) to be made public.

Jane Haswell, Lisa Ward, Natasha Cornick and Shona Mansonhave had no political activity in the last fiveyears.

NHS Shetland is responsible for meeting the health needs and improving the health of around 23,000 people living in the Shetland Islands. NHS Shetland employs approximately 620 staff and provides a comprehensive range of acute, mental health, primary and community services.
