Member Reappointed to Scottish Qualifications Authority Board

The Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Education and Skills, John Swinney today announced the reappointment of Roger Stewart as a Member of the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).

MEMBER

Roger Stewart is a change delivery and organisational development consultant with a background in: human resources; talent management and succession planning; skills development and training delivery. He has extensive experience of setting strategy and delivering successful change (for which he was awarded an OBE in 2013). He has conducted reviews of public sector change programmes on behalf of the UK and Scottish Governments. He also brings to his role as a member of the SQA Board leadership and management experience from 37 years of Army service.

REAPPOINTMENT

This reappointment will be for 4 years and will run from 1 May 2017 to 30 April 2021.

This reappointment is regulated by the Commissioner for Ethical Standards in Public Life in Scotland.

REMUNERATION

This reappointment is part-time and attracts a remuneration of £4,739 for a time commitment of 23 days per year.

OTHER MINISTERIAL APPOINTMENTS

Mr Stewart is Convenor of the Advisory Council which provides stakeholder advice to the SQA board.

POLITICAL ACTIVITY

All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity within the last five years (if there is any to be declared) to be made public. Mr Stewart has not undertaken any political activity in the last 5 years.

BACKGROUND

The SQA is responsible for devising, reviewing, validating and awarding qualifications used largely by schools, colleges, private training organisations, and some individual organisations. It quality assures all the centres that deliver SQA qualifications and has an accreditation role.
