12 / Street litter collection / $963,000 / Collection of waste & recycling from bins at public places (eg shopping districts and sports grounds) – includes collection of wind-blown litter in roadsides through the use of Rough Terrain Vehicles (RTV) and the removal of illegally dumped rubbish from Rural & Urban roadsides utilising large tipper with crane & bobcat.
13 / Street and footpath sweeping / $972,000 / Sweeping of urban streets, Arterial roads, public car parks and footpaths in commercial precincts.

In addition Council undertakes a capital works program, some of which could be categorised as beautification works. In the last 2 years Council has undertaken:
- Palmerston Street bus interchange works
- Tree planting as part of the Gourlay Road duplication works
- Undergrounding of powerlines in McKenzie Street as part of the construction of the new Melton Library
- Street tree plantings at various locations including: Yuille Street, Centenary Avenue, High Street, Henry Street and Unitt Street.
In addition to the contracted open space maintenance Council has in place an in-house Open Space Improvement Team. This comprises a team of five (5) who are charged with undertaking targeted landscape improvements in key locations. Recent works including landscaping at: Courthouse Plaza, High Street / Melton Highway, Burnside Heights Recreation Reserve, Springside Recreation Reserve and Alexandra Street. The team have access to Council owned plant to enable them to undertake the landscape improvement works. A long term plan for landscape improvement is being developed to be incorporated into Council’s 5 year works program.
