When you are the Grammarian (GR)

Being a Grammarian is truly an exercise in expanding your listening skills. Your responsibilities are to comment on the use of English during the course of the meeting and to provide examples of good grammar and word usage.

At the Beginning of the Meeting : Explain your role

Ø  The Toastmaster of the Evening (TME) will call on you to explain your duties in the Introduction of Program and Facilitators Session.

Ø  Suggested script for explanation:

“Good evening. Ladies and gentlemen. I’m very happy to be your Grammarian tonight. The purpose of the Grammarian is to spot good use of English, as well as English usage or sentence structure that we can improve.”

During the Meeting

Ø  Throughout the meeting, listen to everyone’s word usage.

Ø  Write down any awkward use or misuse of the language (incomplete sentences, sentences that change direction in midstream, incorrect grammar or malapropisms).

Present your Report

Ø  You should report clearly and creatively in Grammarian’s Report Session.

Ø  Think of interesting ways when presenting your report. You can use your imagination to comment those who did well and advise those who could improve.

Ø  Don’t embarrass the speakers by mentioning their names if they make mistakes.

Ø  Keep you session brief and precise.
