COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course provides an overview of the law that affects international business and trade. Students will be introduced to law in general, and the differences/similarities among various legal systems. The specific legal concepts that influence the structure and conduct of global business will be explained, along with a description of the corresponding provisions of Turkish commercial law (or other private law). Instructional emphasis will be placed on practical knowledge, and will be supplemented by comparative legal analysis.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

One of the objectives of the course is to help the students achieve a perception of legal concepts. However, the primary objective is to lay out a framework for the students to take advantage of when doing business on a global scale. In order to assist students in familiarizing themselves with the actual practice of international business law, samples of international business contractswill also be provided.

EXAMS AND EVALUATION (100 Points Possible)

Midterm Exam: 45 points

Final Exam:45 points

Participation: 10 points(see section “B” below)

  1. ATTENDANCE

It is strongly recommended thatstudents attend all lectures. Attendance will not be taken on a regular basis. However, a lack of regular attendance will result in poorer grades on exams. You also risk missing an in-class activity and participation points, which cannot be made up any other way. Finally, skipping class is contrary to the professional attitude that one should develop at university.

  1. PARTICIPATION

Students are expected to contribute to class discussions. Students should make relevant comments, answer questions if called upon, and participate inclass activities. We will do5 in-class activities during the semester worth 2 points each (for a maximum of 10 points). I will try to announce the activities 1 week in advance, so please plan accordingly. Students will not receive participation points for an activity unless they attend and participate on that day. There areno substitutes, make-ups, or extra credit available for participation points!

  1. EXAM MAKE-UP POLICY

Students who miss the midterm or final and wish to take a make-up exam must inform me within 24 hours of the missed exam and submit a valid excusewhich prevented exam attendance (i.e., don’t be a no-show, then tell me 3 days later that you missed an exam because your cousin’s uncle died). The decision to allow a make-up exam is at the discretion of the instructor.
