Meeting called to Order - 8:30 a.m. by Dr. Staples

Dr. WarrenWhite approved minutes of November 19 meeting, seconded by Dr. Goodson. Minutes stand approved as read.

Standing Committee Reports

  1. Academic Affairs– Dr. Burenheide

1. Leadership Studies are assigning permanent course numbers to several of their 502 courses and changing seminar hours from 2-3. Committee moved for approval, Dr. White seconded motion. Motion passes.

2. Change to undergraduate curriculum admission requirements for the Praxis Core Academic Skills Test for Educators rather than the PPST. Dr. Harbstreit moved approval; seconded by Dr. Yanke, motion passes.

  1. Faculty Affairs – Dr. Lane

Materials for the Michael C. Holen Graduate Teaching of Excellence Award have been received and the committee will be reviewing them shortly.

  1. Student Affairs – Dr. Larson

Student of Promise materials have been received and will be reviewed shortly.

  1. Diversity for Community– Dr. Zacharakis

February 10 at 4:00p.m., Harry Bellefonte will give a speech at the McCain Auditorium. Please mark that on your calendar.

E.Technology – Dr. Knackendoffel

The iPads have been distributed to all of the Block 1/A students. Those teaching in those courses are also piloting Canvas a course management system. The next POLL meeting is scheduled for February 18. Dr. Talab will lead the discussion, which will include the Sloan Quality Scorecard for learning.GerrySnyderwill conduct training for Adobe Connect will January 30 and February 6, 10:00 a.m., online.

Other reports

  1. Faculty Senate – Dr. Knackendoffel

An electronic report was sent out. The Kanas Board of Regents distributed a social media policy. Please make sure to review the policy in the report. An open forum with the President and Provost will be held February 6, in the Union ballroom from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Cats in the Capital is a yearly event in which we talk to the legislators, this year KSU withdrew from the event.

  1. Graduate Council – Dr. Taylor

College Net is moving forward. Next week is training for faculty.

  1. EGSO– Julie Middleburg

Three programs upcoming this semester. February 10 at 3:30 is focused on professional organizations and Dr. Burenheide will be one of the panelists. Reminders of upcoming events will be sent out.

  1. Continuing Education– Rosemary Boggs

There are 102 distance education courses this spring. Numbers are increasing again. We currently have a Curriculum and Instruction online graduate program brochure describing course offerings.

  1. Education Council– Darla Stone

April 5 is Open House. We are working to get a commitment from clubs regarding how they plan to be involved.

  1. Center for Student and Professional Services– Dr. Griffin

Keith Powers will be leaving and taking a new position as an Academic Director on February 2. A search is being organized to fill his position. Congratulations Keith, you will be missed!

  1. CIMA Center – Cristina Fanning

Welcomed back 40 Masters Students from Ecuador. This brings our numbers to over 400 teachers. We are working currently to fill a position at the Language Institute in Ecuador.

Dean’s Report

  • Dr. Teagarden is taking over facilities coordinator.
  • Dr. Spears has been working to help build the Olathe campus and will be transitioning back to the College of Education as the Director for the Center for Science Education.
  • The iPad rollout to students was exciting.
  • One of Dr. Larson’s classes is piloting the use of Kindles.
  • The iPad camp was well attended with approximately 264 with another 40 or so on the waitlist, combining classroom teachers with faculty on iPad training. A great day and great feedback from the event.
  • We will host a statewide school counseling conference in June and an adult education conference in 2015.
  • Regarding the budget, 1.5% was cut last year and we were able to the amount centrally. Please recognize that there were significant cuts that were felt (right now anywhere from 2-6%). We are working diligently in planning efforts to determine how to absorb and deal with budget cuts. Please visit with the Dean with any questions or concerns.
  • Congratulations again to Rusty Earl for the work on the documentary, A Long Road Home. It debuted yesterday and is a very powerful film that was extremely well done. Thank you to Dr. Griffin and Dr. Rankin for agreeing to be a part of this documentary.
  • Molly Hamm is the 2014 Distinguished Young Alumni and will be back on campus on the 25th.
  • Completion of the Bluemont Circle will be underway shortly.
  • As part of the GO Teacher Program, a mentoring opportunity will be forthcoming. Dr. Thurston will organizethis effort, so please look for her regarding this.
  • We’ve moved up to 72nd in the standings for Online Education, US News and World Report. Well done!
