1)Practice Council Representative to the Executive Committee update (Bill N, Susan, Jim Cook)
-Jim Cook in Texas on a consult
  • Hiring an ED
– job description finished and is in the process of distribution & re-distribution
-On the SCRA website
-If you know someone please encourage them to apply
-Question as to why a PhD requirement and a number of reasons regarding experience, depth and being able to hire someone with those credentials for part time?
  • Re-Design of the SCRA website to cover 9 different purpose critical to Mission
-Need recommendations on what part of the site is for everyone and for the membership
-Polled EC for 7 attributes critical to Vision & Mission that included international recognition
  • Financial Status of SCRA
-Over $900,000 in dollars
-Working toward reaching out to ways to maximize investment with socially responsible funds
  • Ideas about transparency of EC activities
-Currently 2 sets of minutes
-One on website
-One not on website
-BUT the EC is close to making the total minutes all available on the website
-Transparency on decisions and recommendation is supported while trying to figure out details of the names of EC members who take action or say things
2)Community Psychology Competencies & Standards (CPPC/CEP – Tom & Jim Dalton) Amanda Archer, Dawn Henderson, Andy Hostetler, David Julian, Rhonda Lewis, Al, Gregor Sarkisian)
  • Waiting to get final recommendations/approval from APA
  • U Mass Lowell working with the Competencies and how their program addresses them
  • WSU – Tom when visiting Kansas facilitated a session with faculty students on the current state future state on how we address competencies across the 3 E’s (exposure, experience, expertise)
  • AntiochCollege and Gregor working toward what fits and what does not
  • Pacifica through the consultation of Tom and Gregor are doing a similar process on what Pacifica covers, what is does not and what it does not want to cover
3)CEP Collaboration/Changing Community Psychology Graduate Training
(Tiffeny, Judah, Al, Jim Dalton, Gregor, Greg, Bill &Tom)
  • Susan reported on her visit to Cairo which went very well
  • Excellent opportunity to meet with all faculty and students (who are wonderful)
  • Susan met with other units on campus that might provide collaboration and partnership
  • A useful component was the visit facilitated meeting with these other units
  • Began a review of courses and what competencies are covered
  • Issues we not so different from other new programs and existing programs in the U.S.
  • Gloria suggested thatSerdar Degirmencioglu from Turkey has material on access to PhD programs in US and other places - He would be a valuable resource to Cairo
  • Things are moving forward at Pacifica including a conference call with Tom and Gregor last week
  • One of the faculty is about to go on sabbatical to work in Mexico which will be a pause in the work
  • Shep reported that UofW have started a new program Civic Society and Community Research not in the Psychology Department
  • Took about 2.5 years to get through the University process to get approved
  • Hired Brian Christians who graduated from Vanderbilt with the other 5/6 faculty from variety of disciplines
  • Focused on core values including
-Public scholars
-Connection between research and practice
  • Shep called Tom asking about new programs and was surprised about Pacifica and Cairo
  • Shep reported that new programs could be developing in different places than well established existing programs in Psychology Departments
  • Shep and some colleagues will be going to Barcelona
  • Shep will be reaching out to CEP for information and assistance
  • Are there other programs out there that might learn from these experiences = YES
  • Are there other new, budding programs like Miami who is working toward a PhD
  • National Louis recently started
  • Vince’s PhD program is “Community Health Education”
  • Shep also started an undergraduate program that is doing well
  • Surprising that Initiative drew new programs though it was originally designed for existing programs
  • Dawn has volunteered to be helpful to CEP on these issues
  • Shep ask how SCRA finds new programs if there is support from SCRA for the development of new programs?
  • Graduate study in psychology on APA website has only 12 community psychology programs
  • Insight is that new programs are not likely to evolve within traditional Psychology Departments
4)Media Group (Bill B., Dawn, Olya, Suzette, Mike)
  • Bill B was not able to be on but this Group is moving forward
5)Profiles Project (Kyrah, Rachel) - Jim Cook, Bill B, Susan W, Alexis H, Victoria, Dyana, Al, Rachel
Need/Opportunity: All of us need to add our profiles! Updates on profiles posted and re-formatting.
  • Kyrah & Rachel were not able to be on but profiles are moving forward
  • Everyone on the call next month will be asked if they have provided a profile
6)Global Journal of Community Psychology Practice (Vince, Tom) Victoria, Liesette, Dyana
Need/Opportunity: Recruiting submissions from abroad
  • Liesetteis moving on as her family has expanded
  • Tim Aubry from Ottawa has joined the team which is great
  • Another issue of the Journal coming out before the Barcelona conference
  • Presentations at Barcelona conference on the Journal the special International Conference issue
  • Another upcoming issue with a some important articles and some great videos
  • Enough material for 2 upcoming volumes
  • Another proceedings of conferences will be upcoming with Miami Biennial and beyond
  • Special issue that Susan, Victoria and Tiffeny are work in process
  • Still working on translation which is not easy
  • Shep and colleagues have contributed a useful tool for an upcoming issue
  • Video winners will be in the Journal
  • The Global Journal has been a remarkable success with lots of help, leadership and support from lots of individuals, organizations and SCRA
  • Australian article about how they fought legislation to eliminate sectors of psychology with 9 commentaries
  • Very special thanks to Vince
7)SCRA Webpage – Online Forums and Blog (Zach) Kyrah, Gina, Sharon
Need/Opportunity:Blog Contributors - Explain what community psychology practice looks like.
  • Up to 12,000 visits to the Blog
  • One great upcoming topic might be “new community psychology programs”
8)Mini-Grants (Bill N, Sharon, Al)
  • Sharon has been talking to the topical Interest Group on Community Psychology from AEA
  • This is resulting in a mini-grant advisory group
  • Evaluation work continuing
  • Idea about a survey to those who have received a mini-grant?
9)CP Practice Book (Susan & Victoria)
  • Sage sent prospectus to 7 reviewers which generated very positive feedback
  • Once Susan and Victoria respond to reviewers Sage is ready to develop a contract
10)SCRA Book Series
  • Tom was on recent conference call with those on those on the SCRA Book Series committee
  • Tom questioned why the book series will not include the term “Community Psychology”
  • Focus is almost exclusively on research with virtually no mention of Practice
  • Tom reported it was like “stepping back in time” 20 years in terms of our field
  • Meg wondered to Gloria why the CP Practice Book was not in this series.
  • Susan reported that SCRA Book Series was not ready so they moved ahead with Sage
11)Material for next TCP (Susan, Jim Dalton)
  • Working on a column on nonprofits
  • August column joint with CEP on advocacy as a competency
  • Need ideas for the column after August on a domain (e.g., nonprofits, funders)
  • What about public health (Vince said good idea) or evaluation (AEA)
12)Early Career Initiative (Gloria)
  • Eight working on this initiative
  • Negotiating with APA for a listserve
  • Working on a Mission statement
  • Wants to be an Interest Group
  • Hope that people will support the creation of this Interest Group
  • Will continue to work on the teleconferences and are recruiting people to speak
13)SCRA Policy Group Update (Tom, Chris)
  • Chris reported that more information is on the SCRA webpage
  • Those receiving policy grants are on the SCRA webpage
  • Those interested please review these mini-grants and the procedures for applying
  • Students on this group took the lead in getting material on the web
  • Jean Hill will be taking a leadership role in developing a policy on prevention

  • Gloria reported that Andy Hostetler got behind on this
  • Two in early summer then lots in the fall
  • Andy reported to Gloria that he was not able to find Idealist folks to get involved in these fairs (not returning his calls or e-mails)
  • SCRA is a partner organization and if space is available we get it at no cost
  • What to do next to not lose this opportunity?

  • Bill B, Tom, Susan and others are going
  • Bill B will be promoting a global community psychology university

  • Ready to re-launch of the survey including 3 questions:
-Proficiency for each of the 18 competencies
-Use of the 18 competencies
-Interest in CEUs for each of the 18
  • Question about broadening the base beyond the SCRA listserve
