11 / To know the meaning of vocabulary related to the topic of rural and urban areas
(45 mins) / Intro:
Ask the children to think, pair, share some of the new (vocabulary) words that we have learnt this term in geography
Explain that we are going to be learning the definitions of many of these words today so that we can use them in the future: settlement, rural, urban, urbanisation, counter-urbanisation, hamlet, village, town, city, population, crops and agriculture
Model how to use Quizlet
Main:
Children to log-in to their accounts at Quizlet.com (if they have them. If they don’t, they are free and easy to setup, but the games can be played without having a Quizlet account. They will need an account for the extension)
The activities are available at http://quizlet.com/49139947/flashcards
The password for the activities is f5pi2
Children to use the flashcards to learn the meaning of the words
Model for them how to hear the words spoken aloud by turning the audio on (on the right-hand side of the screen)
Children to practise learning the terms using the various games on Quizlet in the following order (from easy game to difficult game):
· scatter
· learn
· test
· speller
· space race
Extension: Children to find out the meaning of the following words and create a game on Quizlet to help them to learn them: density, council, suburb and community
The children can find out the meaning by using the internet and then putting the definition in their own words
To do this, they can click the Quizlet logo in the top left-hand corner, then click ‘Create a set’
Plenary:
Close down computers and / or return to class
Give children a card with either a term or a definition on it
Each child needs to find their corresponding partner e.g. the child with ‘Population’ needs to find the child with ‘The number of people that live in an area’ (only give terms from extension to the children who got on to the extension)
Ask each pair to read out their term and its meaning / PCs / laptops
Account set up for class / each child on Quizlet.com (not essential, except for the extension)
Cards (printed on card and cut out) / MUST: know some of the terms and their definitions
SHOULD: know more of the terms and their definitions
COULD: know all of the terms and their definitions and find out the meaning of some additional terms
