Subject Covered PSHE–Relationships/Managing their Mental & Emotional Health & Wellbeing. / Year / K.S.
Class Grp / Teacher / Period covered : / No. of Sessions
Learning Objectives :
  • Children will develop knowledge of, an understanding of and the skills to manage their emotions.
  • They will develop an understanding of themselves and the ability to work with others and help to form and maintain good relationships.
  • They will learn about good and not so good feelings and will develop simple strategies for managing and coping with these feelings.

Teaching Activities :
Initially have a brief chat about anxiety and stress – a simple Q&A session to help the pupils relax. Make it fun – Take turns - maybe use a soft toy to pass from ‘Speaker to Speaker’ Give examples of things you know they may worry about (tests, friendships, family etc) Role-play?
Talk about how to deal with emotions –eg.anger/sadness/worry/distress. Suggest ‘coping strategies’- Eg. walk away; go to a quiet corner and read; play with a favourite toy; draw; listen to music etc.
Introduce zentangle doodling as a ‘coping strategy’ Demonstrate the technique step by step
Use a small white square of paper (9cmx9cm) and a fine black felt pen – draw a black line around the edge with a ruler.
Segment the square into at least 4 irregular sections.
Begin to draw small shapes or patterns in a repetitive way within the segment.
Use a different pattern or design for each segment – slowly let the act of trying to fill the shape take over your thoughts until you get lost in the physical process.
Ask for feedback from pupils in the plenary – How did you feel? Did you forget your worry?
Learning Outcomes :
Children will recognise that they have learned a strategy to help them keep calm or calm themselves down when faced with a problem they are struggling with.
Assessment : Are children able to ..
Differentiation :
More able – expect more independence and complex patterns
Less able – could be given a larger square which could then be reduced in size on the photocopier to conform to the size required for this particular project
