Job Description

Medical Centre Assistant

Responsible to Principal of King’s Ely

Via the Community Welfare Adviser

and the Lead School Nurse

Key responsibilities:

·  Provision of First Aid treatment on school campus as required

·  Triage of unwell and injured pupils

·  Provide assessment and management of pupils attending the medical centre when the school nurse is not in attendance

·  Provide basic nursing care for the unwell child

·  Provision of basic wound management

·  Recording and monitoring pupils temperature, pulse, respirations and blood sugars

·  Performing and recording visual acuity testing, colour blind checks, peak flow monitoring, height, weight, blood pressure and urinalysis testing for new patient medicals

·  Understanding the Asthma protocol and to give treatment in an emergency situation

·  Understanding the Anaphylaxis protocol and to give treatment in an emergency situation

·  Understanding the Blood Sugar Monitoring protocol and to give treatment in an emergency situation

·  Ordering and stocking of medication and medical supplies

·  To administer medication to pupils/staff in accordance to school drug administration policy

·  Stocking of the school First Aid Kits

·  Extracting data from the iSAMs school system i.e. medical reports of boarders for boarding houses and trips

·  Administration work of organising school medicals and filing of all medical papers.

·  Communication links to teachers, parents and other health care professionals.

·  Transfer and escort injured pupils to the Minor Injuries Unit/A&E and unwell pupils to St. Mary`s Surgery for review.

·  Transfer and escort injured or unwell pupils to hospital as required.

·  Escorting pupils to medical appointments as required.

This description is not exhaustive and may well be subject to change over time. The intention is to offer candidates an accurate impression of the expectations commensurate with the post and an outline of the role as it is envisaged at this time.

Remuneration and Hours:

Term Time (34 weeks per year):

35hrs per week in the Medical Centre

Attendance on INSET days (within the days prior to the start of each term)

Non-term time:

30 days (max) per year on-call covering choir commitments and stay/overs as follows: (24 hr telephone cover)

Start of academic year: 2 days during INSET training

Michaelmas half-term: 2 days during first weekend and 2 days over the last weekend

Michaelmas end of term: 2 days during first weekend plus 5 days over Christmas

Lent half-term: 2 days during first weekend and 2 days over the last weekend

Lent end of term: 2 days during first weekend plus 5 days over Easter

Summer half term: 2 days during first weekend and 2 days over the last weekend

Summer end of term: 2 days during the first weekend.

Summer School ((first 4 weeks of King’s Ely school summer holiday):

·  20 days (35 hours a week) Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri & Sat 9am – 4.30pm (half-hour unpaid lunch) Salary: Up to £15,631.00 per annum, depending upon experience and qualifications

  • Whilst you are on call you are expected to be within twenty minutes of the school and available by phone; the on-call responsibilities are paid within the annual salary.
  • Start date immediate.
  • This represents 44 paid weeks each year, of which approximately 39 weeks are worked and 5 weeks are paid holidays.

Qualifications, skills & training

·  Basic awareness of health, safety and hygiene (essential)

·  Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.

·  IT literate using normal office applications (some training will be given on our bespoke systems).

·  Able to work flexibly and independently.

·  Hold a First Aid at Work certificate (training will be provided)

·  Previous experience of care of children and young people is essential.

Training:

King’s Ely recognises the value of training its staff in relevant areas to enable them to fulfil their potential, and to maintain a happy and committed work force. A three day first aid course, in- house clinical training, Child Protection and Health and Safety training would be provided. External study days relevant to the role would be supported.

Terms & Conditions

·  There is a pension scheme operated by the School for the support staff. The employee's contribution is 6.4% of gross pay by monthly deductions at source and the School contributes 16∙48%. Please note that the school's level of contribution has historically been linked to the Teachers' Pension but this linkage is not guaranteed. Contribution rates may vary upwards or downwards in future years.

·  An alternative, auto enrolment pension scheme involving lower contributions is also in place.

  • Members of staff are entitled to educate their own children in any of the three parts of the school. There is a staff discount from Reception onwards; the discount is 50% for full-time staff, reduced pro-rata for part-time staff, subject to an overall limit of 50% of gross salary.

All extra items are to be paid in addition.

·  The school offers a private healthcare scheme (presently provided by AXA), which staff may opt to join, at their expense, in November each year.

·  School lunch provided when working during lunch times

·  Use of gym facilities and swimming pool (during summer)
