Re:Security Concerns From LSU House Staff Association Meeting
Date:August 13, 2010
As a result of the security concerns related to Hospital Police from the LSU House Staff Association meeting, I submit the following information as to the security measures and protocols currently in place by this department.
If a doctor, nurse, resident, or any other employee or visitor feels unsafe when they are departing the hospital, an escort request can be made where a police officer will meet the party and ensure that they are safely escorted to their vehicle. To request an escort, the Hospital Police Department Communications Center can be reached by calling (504) 903-6337.
Hospital Police provide regular, routine external patrols of University Hospital and the immediate area surrounding the campus. These patrols occur by way marked and unmarked patrol vehicles, three wheeled battery operated personal transportation cycles, and foot patrol. Said patrols occur 24 / 7, 365 days per year. Any suspicious activities that are observed should be reported to the Police Communications Center which will immediately dispatch an officer to investigate the situation.
There is a secured walkway that is accessible by everyone who has been issued an LSU ID card used for card access throughout the facility. The secured walkway can be accessed by using the crossover walkway from the 4th floor of University Hospital to the 5th floor of the UMOB building. Once on the 5th floor you would need to go to the first floor of UMOB where the elevator to the secured walkway is located. This area is under continuous monitoring, via closed circuit television, by LSUHSC and Hospital Police.
There is the closed circuit television monitoring of the parking lots that are used for parking by the employees who work in and around the University Hospital campus. Hospital Police regularly visit these lots during their external patrols and the use of the CCTV system adds considerably to the level of security at these locations.
And finally, there are emergency call boxes located in each of the parking lots. In the event of a suspicious activity or other urgent need for police involvement, the generation of a signal from one of these boxes will promptly notify the Communication Center and an officer will be dispatched to the location to investigate.
The safety and security of our visitors, employees and patients is the Hospital Police Department’s number one priority. We are here to protect and serve and are ready, willing and able to do just that. All persons should be encouraged to contact Hospital Police whenever we can be of assistance.
Respectfully submitted,
Deputy Chief of Police
