Introduction
The Media Relations Team sits within the Communications Department and advises WaterAid on media relations strategy. The team leads all interaction with the UK and international media and supports Country Programmes on media relations. The team also works with media officers in other WaterAid members in Australia, Sweden, Canada and USA. The team is made up of two desks. The News Desk leads on all matters relating to the policy and campaigns department, corporate news issues and news planning. The Public Relations Desk generates publicity around corporate partnerships, WaterAid events and strategic PR campaigns.
Rolepurpose
To provide media support to the Media Team, working with team members on a wide range of news and PR campaign activities, reporting to a Media Officer.
Key tasks
- To produce daily media summaries on relevant news to the organisation.
- To monitor WaterAid media coverage.
- To produce monthly highlights of media team activities and presentations of coverage for major projects to share internally.
- To write and distribute press releases.
- To produce copy as required for print and web outlets, in-house or external.
- To provide support to colleagues in the UK and overseas involved in media relations work
- To help organise media trips.
Person specification
Skills and experience required
- Proven experience of working in an in-house press office, PR agency, or as a journalist, or studying for a relevant degree or qualification.
- Excellent command of written English to produce written media work of high quality.
- Excellent verbal communication skills, including ability to be persuasive.
- Good decision-making skills related to media work.
- Ability to forge effective working relationships within the team and with colleagues from across the organisation.
- Proven ability to prioritise workload and work under pressure to tight deadlines.
- Commitment to personal learning, development and improvement in pursuit of own objectives and those of the team and organisation.
- A team player, able to work in a collaborative way.
- Commitment to WaterAid’s values and a working style that reflects these.
- Good IT skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Good understanding of social media.
